Walking on R.R. track; Killed Julius Hopke, 78, Sterling Meets death when he Fails to Hear train.

Julius Hopke of Sterling, 78 yrs old, was killed Saturday noon when train No. 202 struck him on the right shoulder as he was walking toward Sterling upon the railroad track. Mr. Hopke had his head well bundled to protect him from the weather. This in addition to the fact that he was somewhat deaf, is believed to have caused him to not notice or hear the approach of the train. The accident occurred about one mile north of Sterling. He came to Sterling from Bay City 40 years ago. He is survived by six children, Mrs. Chas. Neuman, Sterling; Mrs. Wm. Martin, Roscommon; August of Moores Junction; Edward, Indian River; Gust and Emil, Flint.

Leaves wife, 3 daughters, and 2 sons.

Mrs. Mary Stone passed away at the home of her son William, Thursday June 2, 1927 after a short illness of only a few days.
    Mary Rosetta Donaldson was born at Saline, MI June 22, 1837. She was united in marriage to Clark Stone, Jan. 1, 1859. To this union was born five children of which only 2 survive, a daughter, Mrs. J.C. Fox, and a son, William, both of Sterling. Her husband preceded her in death in 1882.
    In addition to her son and daughter she is survived by 4 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors.
    Her Christian life endeared her to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all those who know her. She has been a resident in this county for over 30 years.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the home at 12 o'clock and at the M.E. Church of Sterling at 1:00 by Rev. Geo Nevin. Interment was made in the Sterling Cem.

     Obit: "Gus Major Dead. August T. Major died at his home in Pine River August 18 after a brief illness. The deceased was born at Arenac September 9, 1859 and always resided in this county. July 22, 1882 he was married to Miss Mary T. Derusha who preceded him in death some years ago. He is survived by his two sons and 1 daughter, Martin of Pine River, Ervin & Mrs. Ed Kiley of Standish, by his widow, Mary Mace Major to whom he was married July 20, 1927 and 3 sisters. Funeral services were conducted from the house by Rev. Charles Edinger of Tawas, Saturday, August 20th. Mr. Major was one of the real pioneers of this county having actually "grown up' with it. He was very active during its lumbering period and operated several camps about Arenac and Omer." (clipping, no name, date, page)
