Saturday,January 1
Found my self at a dance at Glicks. Had a gay time. Got “cc” granted with many fair damsell. Went home at 4:00. Went to bed slept untill the sun was high in the heavens. Got up and worked all day. The first day of the glorious centennial year.
Sunday, January 2
Got up in morning. Done my chores. Got ready and went to Bronsons and from there went to Trout Creek meeting in company with Oliver Bronson. Came back and took tea with Miss Bronson. Stopped at David___________ on my way home.
Monday, January 3
Chored around all day and at night went to Trout Creek Church and witnessed a Dutch Hoedown. The evening being fair had a very delightful ride and got home at 12:00.
Tuesday, January 4
Went to Constantine and loafed around all day. Came home and done my chores. Eat my supper and went out to call on my friends and talk over old times.

Friday, January 7
6 OC Got up with the intention of loafing all day,but __ a load of corn for horses. At night went to Dutch meeting. Had glorious times, you bet.
Saturday, January 8
Went to Constantine. Loafed around a while and then had ten teeth pulled and came home. Mouth feels like there was something wrong with it, but hope it will get well soon. Weather very fine.
Sunday, January 9
Staid in house all day. Read newspapers. Slept a while. Rained all day. Snow at night. No frost in ground. No ice in lakes. Lakes have not been frozen over yet. Wheat growing finely.
Monday, January 10
Done chores in morning. Done nothing all the rest of the day. This is the first day that looks like winter. Very cold wind and some snow.
I am getting sad and lonely
By my little cottage door
And the snow is flying around me
And loudly the wind does roar
Tuesday, January 11
Went to Constantine. Had teeth fixed. Loafed around town until 6:00. Came home. Eat my supper. Set around a while and went to bed. Think some of going to the Centennial.
Wednesday, January 12
Setting around awaiting for Sunday to come and then I will go and see my girl. Oyster supper tomorrow eve don’t know as I shall attend. Weather bright and warm, about an inch of snow.
Thursday, January 13
Done my chores. George Pangborn came along I went to Union with him. Came home and eat my dinner and went and paid H.H. Bowen. Came home, done my chores and eat my supper and hitched up the team for the _______ to go the __________. Thought I would not go.
Friday, January 14
Went up the road, found out that Rice was going to the Crossing and went along with him. Came home, done my chores, and after supper helped ________. Weather very fair. No sign of snow.
Saturday, January 15
Helped Castle saw wood all day. Weather very disagreeable, some rain, some snow, and more of both a- coming. Feel like the devil,my clothes wet with sweat from the inside to the out – and from the outside to the in with rain and snow. Want to go and see my girl tomorrow night.
Sunday, January 16
Felt pretty stiff and sore from my labor yesterday, but thought I might brace up and have some fun. So I got ready and went to D. Stannard’s had a first class time and went to meeting at night but the rain prevented me of taking the girl and so I took her brother but had my fun just the same and had no time to call on my other sweetheart.

Monday, January 17
Saddled my pony with the intention of going to Vandalia. Went up to H_____s and loafed all the forenoon, in the afternoon went to Vandalia. Staid until the night and went to meeting at ______School House. There was a fair show of good looking maids there and one especially that kept looking at me. I winked at her. She winked at me then bowed her head and smiled.

Tuesday, January 18
The day is incidental, a little of everything. The weather is providential. Rains straight down, black as a dead nigger overhead and then in the house. The year is Centennial and I am bound to go and see my other girl some night this week.
I wish I was a humming bird

Well, I have occupied the greater portion of this day to doing nothing.
Notes: The weather looks favorable for sleighing. One snowflake fell and _______of another.
Allways look out for a storm when the wood chucks fly.
_______of a frost – the sun is under a cloud.
Plug up that hole in your boot toe or the frost would _____ your toes.
Snow as fast as your ______. Shan’t go to the Centennial tonight.
Thursday, January 20
Staid at home all day and had a dull time of it. At night went to Protracted Effort – had a very nice meeting, but the girl I went to escort home failed to come and I failed to bring her so I had a chance of coming home again. The weather is very fair, the roads are very rough, the snow is very thin.
Friday, January 21
Went to funeral of V.B.Williams child. Went to dance at Mottville. Didn’t have very interesting time there, but a-coming home we had…………………………….a fine time. Father, dear father, come home.

Well I feel like hell. Getting some of the horses shod. Raines by spells.
Sunday, January 23
Intended to go to church but _______ _________ and did not go. At night went to church at Williamsville. Had fun and got home at 12 OC and went to bed.

Went to George Whited’s and loafed a while. Came home and ground the sausage. Very much mud.
Saturday, January 29
Staid at home all day. Cold weather. No snow or appearance of snow. The ground is froze a little this morning.
Sunday, January 30
Sat around home all day till 2 o.c. and then hitched up and went to see my girl and get acquainted with ___ McDonald. Went to church to Williamsville at night – had good time in general and got home at 2 o.c. p.m. The roads very much rough.

Went to Constantine and got the mail and bought me a granger hat and a box of collars.

Went to sale at John Rittenrander’s, did not buy anything. The weather stormy. A little snow and lots of wind.
Wednesday, February 2
Went rabbit hunting, caught two rabbits, had lot of fun. Slight snow on the ground. Lakes froze, about 2” thick. Roads very rough. Meeting tonight but did not attend.
Thursday, February 3
Resolve that I would abandon smoking and drinking anything stronger than tea and coffee. Went skunk hunting, caught one. _______ smell ______ _____. Went at night to meeting at Williamsville.
Friday, February 4
Had sleigh ride in afternoon and intend having another tonight if the Lord is willing and there is no preventing providence. Am going to a _____ at George Pangborn’s.
Saturday, February 5
Ross Beardsley came home with me and we went rabbit hunting. Went around by ____ and came home by Fisher’s. Plaid a little Seven-up and done my chores and went to bed.
Sunday, February 6
Went to the church and gave the Preacher one dime and came home and put out my horse and went to Rices. Got dinner and went down to Dave Arnolds and got a girl to go to meeting with me. Went to meeting at night, had very agreeable time and came home and went to bed.

Done my chores and resolved to make a chariot. Worked on the chariot till night. Mud very deep.

Got my horse shod and went to Williamsville. Loafed around awhile and went to Dan Stannard’s and from there to night meeting. Pretty good show, and went back to Stannards and staid all night.

Went to Vandalia and loafed a while and came home. Sleighing very poor.
Saturday, March 4
Went to a funeral at the First Baptist Church of Porter. Mrs. George Holaway.
Sunday, March 5
Went to niggar meeting and a grand niggar show and came home. 32 niggars baptized.

Sorted corn. Rained by spells all day. Dropped my teeth and broke them.
Monday, March 13
Went to Constantine to get my teeth fixt but failed and came home.

I am poor and lean and Edward said to himself that were a-going to have a fine day, but how false the Human Mind. A cloud in the west and it has snowed for all that is out all day. We built picket fence on the marsh, and old _______, and was Aaron and Lafaette and Jimmie and Joe were all there. Old sow had 10 pigs.

Took boat and put it in the lake and took Hartman’s oats home. Sorted corn in afternoon.

Went got horses shod, paid $3.00.

Went to Constantine.
Bought harness - $34.80, dinner - $1.25, whip - $1.12.
Went to dance at Spencer Arnold’s at night. Frank Cloud commenced work to day.
Tuesday, March 28
Well I opened my eyes and see that snow was fastly falling and the wind had _____ a fearful cold and I thought I would have my sleigh out and I did. Will we have fun. A great deal of sitting around and doing nothing all day. Snow has fell ____all day and think of trying the sleigh.
