Muncy Family

Many of the leads and information obtained for this file on the Thomas Muncy family, should be recognized as the diligent work done by Mr. Ralph Muncy of Ann Arbor, Michigan in April 1974.
Ref : On file at the Cass County Library in Cassopolis, Michigan.

Thomas H. Muncy - born 1801 and died 18 Sep 1840 in Cass Co., MI -Married: Rebecca McCleary (daughter of William and Rachel (Johnston) McLeary) on 14 JUN 1821 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio to born 1798 in Ohio County, West Virginia and  died abt. 1834 in Cass County, MI.
Thomas' parents, Thomas and Sibbyann Muncy, owned land in Jefferson County, Ohio by 1807 and sold that parcel in 1812. We next find them in Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1818. That land was sold in 1828. Thomas H.. then moved to Cass County, Michigan around 1829. Family lore states that Thomas was reputed to have lived in a wigwam on the shore of Kelsey Lake in Sec. 2 of LaGrange Township. He and his family are listed in Penn twp., in the US Census for 1830. His first known purchase of land was in Sec. 12 of LaGrange Twp. in 1837.

In the History of Cass County, Matthew, Alfred 1825 - 1882 Thomas Muncy, Cass County, Mich,,, Purchases land in Section 12 on March 1, 1837.
Children of Thomas and Rebecca were:
1. William:  31 of Jan 1822 to 17 Aug 1864 probably in California. He wed Rachel H (Umberfield) born abt 1829 - after William's death she remarried a Henry McCleary and they had at least 3 more children.
Children of William and Rachel were:
Harvey Washington Muncy  born 1849 in Cass Co., MI and died 1925 in California
Flora Muncy born 1857 born in Cass Co., MI moved to California and wed Edwin W Bateman
Aner William born April 1864- born in California same year as fathers death. Died Oregon in 1931
2. Matilda - dob 30 Apr 1824in Ohio  and d. 6 May 1872
One of the reasons it is so hard to track this lady is because of the numerous misspellings that I have seen given for this name. Everything from Munsy, Munsey to Muncy has been viewed on various web sites and census records.
But the evidence lies in her will as to what her maiden name actually was, as she states a financial relationship to N. Muncey. Also we find in the 1870 Federal Census for Cass County, Michigan her 3rd marriage to John Argabright and also her brothers and children living not to far from her. They have misspelled again, her brother Abel (Muncy's) name in the census, who lives with Matilda and her 3rd husband.
In Matilda's will we see where she leaves most of her worldly possessions to her 4 children: Mary Foster Graham, Thomas J. Foster, Samuel F. Foster and Rebecca E. Allen (The only child by her 2nd marriage to a Mr. Elihu Allen). We also learn that Elihu and Matilda are divorced in 1859 by referencing information available at Cass County, Michigan.

Only through referencing the 1870 census and noting that Mary Foster Graham was born in Indiana was I able to look through the Indiana marriages and actually find the date and place of the marriage to her first husband, William Foster, in Kosciusko, Indiana in 1845. Further evidence of Matilda's marriage to William Foster is the reference in Matilda's will that a mortgage for Wm. Foster is to be settled from monies from the estate.

Matilda must have known her time was limited as she does write her will and has it witnessed. She is only 48 years of age when she leaves this world on May 6, 1872. She divides all her worldly goods between her children and leaves Rebecca items that she and Rebecca had sewn together. Her daughter Rebecca is given the largest cash settlement from this humble estate which equals about 250$.
Marriage 1 was to William Foster (1824 to 1851) wed
19 SEP 1845 in Kosciusko Co, IN . Three children by this marriage. Mary 1846 - 1928 :  Thomas J. dob abt 1848 : Samuel H. dob abt 1850.
Marriage 2. was to my Great Great Grandffather - Elihu Allen. dob abt 1810 in New York state. Wed Matilda 1 May 1853 in Cass Co., MI. They had one daughter (my Great Grandmother)
Rebecca  E. 1854 to 1929. - See Charles Spooner biography, this site, for more on Rebecca and family.
Matilda divorced from Elihu Allen in 1859.
Marriage 3.   John Argabright abt 1865 in Cass Co.,, MI. John's first wife was also named Matilda.
3. John Muncy
10 AUG 1826 in Ohio - death after 1891 - I have not researched this individual as of this date.
From the notes of Ralph Muncy, is states that through old letters it is told that John was a half-brother of Levi Muncy as were William, Abel, Nimrod and Alexander. John was Livi's favorite. He in the company of his older brother John guided wagon trains to the Pikes Peak area in the late 1850's and also to the Salt Lake City area. Levi was but a youth at the time.

4. Abel Muncy - born abt 1829 in Ohio - he died in Cass Co., MI 30 Mar 1894.

5. Mary Elizabeth Muncy -29 JUL 1830 in Cass County, MI  died - 8 DEC 1912 in Dowagiac, Cass Co., MI
wed George W. Allen  - 8 JAN 1853 in Silver Creek twp, Cass County, Michigan: They had several Children: Seneca Allen: 1854: Laura E, Allen 1858: Charles Allen 25 Oct 1860:
    Jennie Jane Allen - 24 Sep 1862; William Allen - 2 Mar 1865; Lottie Allen - 23 Feb 1868 and George Frank Allen 26 Dec 1872

6. Nimrod Muncy -
29 JUL 1831 in Cass County, MI to 23 NOV 1908 in Dowagiac, MI -
Nimrod served in the Civil War (Co. A - 19th MI Inf. )  and was at Danville, KY in December of 1862. He was taken prisoner Mar 5, 1863 and taken to Richmond, VA and then exchanged 27 days later. He lost 25 pounds in that period. He worked as an assistant cook at Murfreesboro. Matilda's son, Thomas Foster signed his pension claim in 1883.

In the 1870 Federal Census for Cass County, Michigan his name is misspelled as Nimrod Moncey. It shows Nimrod living in Dowagiac area, Wayne Twp. He is living there with his wife Virginia Ward, and two of their children Ella, 11 years old and Servis - a boy 9 years old. There is a large gap of over 10 years in the children between Servis and LeRoy. So perhaps there is either another marriage or the Civil War might be an explanation too.
In Mr. Ralph Muncy's documentation, we find that Nimrod was married at least 4 times.
Jennie Shanafelt, Virginia Ward, Hattie Freelove Gorham (Mar 15, 1892) and Melissa N. Hoadley (m. Aug 31, 1904).
Further exploration of these marriages and children will have to be done. Details of their children may be found on the Branson family tree on Rootsweb.

7. Alexander Muncy born 15 Aug 1834 in Michigan. He is living with the Zadock Clark family in the 1850 census.

Thomas Muncy (1801-1840) took on a second wife (Catherine Bates 1816 to 1889) after his first wife died. Catherine Bates
Catherine Bates was the second of eight children of Isaac Clark Bates and Sarah Powell. Sarah was the second wife of Isaac Clark Bates.
Brothers of Thomas Muncy's first wife Rebecca McCleary settled in Kosciusko Co, Indiana. Perhaps Thomas met his second wife Catherine Bates during his visits to Indiana.
Thomas and Catherine were wed 15 JUL 1841 in Kosciusko Co, IN.

They had two children.

1. Levi Muncy was born 22 Sep 1839 in Cass Co., MI - died
18 NOV 1899 in Traverse City, MI
 -  He wed Caroline Kegg born
22 SEP 1841 in Stark County, Ohio   and died 9 MAR 1932 in Traverse City, MI
wed - 16 SEP 1869 in Warsaw, Kosiusko County, Indiana - Per the notes of Ralph Muncy:
Caroline Kegg was the daughter of Sebastian Kegg and Eva ?. Records indicated that Sebastian was Pennsylvania German and moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio. He was in Stark County Ohio before 1830. Caroline was raised by her step-mother, Maria.
Family letters refer to relatives of Caroline, Aunt Sarah Bixler, Uncle David Mock and Gibler. Families by these names were intertwined in Stark County, Ohio and were found in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Exact relationship to Caroline was not determined. Also appearing on the 1860 Kosciusko County, Indiana Federal Census are some of Caroline's half brothers and sister; Benjamin, Philip, Mary, and John.

Levi and Caroline  had two sons John Irvin and Leander Earl.
Levi and Caroline lived at Dowagiac, Michigan from 1869 to about 1873. They moved to Lake City, Michigan and to Grand Traverse County in 1878. They later lived near Prudenville, Michigan on the Houghton Lake where Livi made a living at farming and fishing. The family travelled between Mayfield and Prudenville frequently by buckboard and a pair of ponies.
They both died in Traverse City, Michigan.

2. Elizabeth Jane MUNCY born 8 Mar 1841 and died 10 DEC 1898 in Warsaw, IN - she married William James Noggle 12 Aug 1859 in Kosiusko County, Indiana.
