Thomas J. Stockdale, is referred to as "of Chicago" in his obituary, August 4, 1904, written by his son, William M. Stockdale. There is a Thomas Stockdale enumerated in the 1840 census, Harrison Twp., Fayette Co., IN. 1860 census, Elkhart, IN., 1880 census, Concord Twp, Elkhart, IN (FHL Film 1254275, National Archives Film T9-0275, Page 461A). In the 1880 census, the informant in the household of Thomas J. Stockdale, age 58, peddler, reported that his father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in PA. I don't know his father's name at this time. Indicates he was born in Ireland and mother born in Pennsylvania.

Thomas J. was married to Catherine B. Manning on Jun 4, 1843 in Elkhart Co., IN. Catherine was born between 1823 and 1825 in either Pennsylvania or Ohio. They had five sons: William M. Stockdale, Anthony Newton Stockdale, John N. Stockdale, Schuyler Stockdale and Charles Warren Stockdale (My, Lynne Stockdale, grandfather). The 1870 Census shows a man named John N. Stockdale. 63 years old in this household. Not sure who he is, brother maybe. The name Newton, appearing as a middle name for his children, appears significant. Catherine Newton (1803-1885) was the wife of John Byington.

Catherine Manning's parents were John Manning and Mary Cramer. John Manning was born Dec 2, 1781 in Hunderdon Co., NJ. He died on Mar 19, 1851 in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana. His wife, Mary Cramer, was born December 22, 1793 in Lebanon, Hunderdon Co., NY and died in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana on June 23, 1870. They had six children, Samuel Manning, born April 12, 1814 in NJ and died 1872 in Elmira, NY. John Wesley Manning, born about 1816 in NJ. Anthony N. Manning, born about 1818 in OH. Catherine Manning (details are above). Mary Manning and William Manning were the last two born. .

Thomas J. and Catherine B. Stockdale's first son, William Manning Stockdale, was born on January 7, 1844 in Elkhart, Indiana and died on July 22, 1904 in Altona, Illinois. Second son, Anthony Newton Stockdale, was born on June 29, 1848 in Goshen, Indiana and died on July 10, 1899 in Cassopolis, Michigan. Third son, John Newton Stockdale, was born on September 1, 1848 in Elkhart, Indiana and died February 21, 1929 in Cassopolis, Michigan. Fourth son, Schuyler Stockdale, was born in 1861 in Elkhart, Indiana and died in 1899 in Elkhart, Indiana. Fifth son, Charles Warren Stockdale, the youngest son, was born on January 7, 1863 in Elkhart, Indiana and died on November 20, 1931 in Cassopolis, Michigan.

Charles Warren Stockdale was born on a farm near Elkhart, Indiana, the fifth son of Thomas J. and Catherine Manning Stockdale. With his parents he lived in this part of the country until he was 17 years old, when he left home to work for the Western Union Telegraph Co. Shortly after this he began his long service with the Illinois Central Railroad. This connection eventually brought him to Waterloo, Iowa, where he met and married Bertha Salisbury on November 9, 1882. They soon moved to Chicago, where they resided during the next twenty-two years. It was here that three of their children, Thomas Elmer., Stephen W. and John Manning, were born. Donald D. was born, 3/14/1884, and died as an infant in Waterloo, IA. During his 33 years with the Illinois Central he rose from lineman to general foreman of the telegraph department and was known and loved by railroad men throughout the territory covered by the I. C. In connection with his duties he came to know Thos. A. Edison and cherished the possession of a small pair of pliers given to him by Mr. Edison. In 1914 the family moved from Chicago to Grand View, Idaho and later in 1920, to Boise, Idaho. In 1925 the family moved back to Michigan to the farm (the Israel Hartsell farm) where they remained. Charles was an active Mason when younger, being a member of Woodlawn Park No. 831 Lodge, Chicago; the Knights Templar, Oriental Consistory and the Royal Arch Masons. He died November 20, 1931. He was the last of his own family, the last of his brothers to go being John N. Stockdale, who died at Cassopolis two years earlier. Obit from Cassopolis Vigilante November 26, 1931.

On July 26, 2002, I, Lynne Stockdale, visited Waterloo, IA to obtain more information about Bertha Salisbury, my grandmother. I went through microfilm at the Waterloo Library and found information about Bertha's father, Stephen F. Salisbury. This led to more information about Florence Salisbury, Jennie Salisbury, Frances Salisbury, Margaret Salisbury and Donald D Stockdale. I learned there actually were four boys born to Charles and Bertha, but Donald died as an infant in Waterloo, IA. I visited the cemetery and took pictures of the gravesites. Charles was the one who purchased the plot and had Donald buried there.

When Stephen and Margaret lived in Waterloo at 514 Almond St., he must have been gone a lot with his business ventures and so Margaret, my great-grandmother, turned that house into a boarding house. She rented to mostly people from the railroad because the house was across the street from the depot. One of the people she rented to was my Grandfather, Charles Stockdale and that is where Bertha met him. Then they married and lived there for a while before moving to Chicago. First baby, Donald was born while they lived in Waterloo, IA. Bertha lost her two middle fingers on her right hand in a washing machine wringer.

Bertha Salisbury Stockdale was born in 1868 and died on May 24, 1956 in Mandon, ND and was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis, Michigan. Mrs. Stockdale was a former resident of Penn Township. Since the death of her husband several years ago (1931), she had made her home with her son Thomas E. Stockdale of Mandon, N. D. (a little northeast of Bismark, N.D.) Two other sons, Stephen of Helena Montana and John of Tucson AZ also survived her. Her obituary was in the Cassopolis, Michigan Vigilante on May 26, 1956.

Charles and Bertha had four sons, Thomas E. Stockdale, Donald D. Stockdale born March 14, 1884 and died as an infant in 1884, Stephen W. Stockdale and John Manning Stockdale, born October 22, 1905 in Chicago, IL and died on Sept 27, 1969 in Tucson, Arizona.

John Stockdale married Mary Katherine Collar on Mar 9, 1927. Mary was born April 6, 1909 in Memphis, TN and died on May 16, 1974 in Tucson, AZ. They had four children. Stephen Case Stockdale was born on Oct 4, 1928 in Chicago, IL and he died on August 3, 1941 in Cassopolis, MI. Charles Frederick Stockdale was born on August 17, 1930 in Elmhurst, IL and died July 28, 2007 in Tucson, AZ. Twins, Lynne Manning and Philip Nelson Stockdale were born on February 2, 1935 in Dowagiac, MI. Philip died on September 27, 1997 in Fayetteville, NC.

Charles "Fred" Stockdale married in 1952 and had four children, all of whom are alive. He also had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren before his death in 2007.
