Job Wright
Cass County Michigan Pioneer
History of Cass County, Michigan - 1882 - pp 65
Among these wandering transient pioneers there were many strange, interesting characters who impressed themselves strongly on the minds of the steadier and solid denizens of the new county. A marked type of this element was an ecentric Job Wright, who lived for a number of years upon Diamond Lake Island, and closed his strange existence in Cass County. From the history of Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio, we know that Job Wright was the first settler at Greenfield, Ohio in 1799. We note from the work mentioned:
Job, a native of North Carolina, emigrated with his father's family to Ross County, Ohio. Originally, he settled at the High Bank, just a few miles south of Chillicothe, but not liking that locality, he removed to Greenfield while as yet that town had no existence, save on paper. From the History of Cass County we learn that Job Wright arrived about 1829 and considered to be a the recluse with two thumbs on one hand. He isolated himself on the island in Diamond Lake due to his dislike for humanity. There he was a squatter until he feared that someone would stake claim to his land, and he registered the same. (November 5, 1833)
He wore buckskin breeches and a fringed shirt secured at the waist with a leather belt from which he suspended a sheath for his long hunting knife. He built a log cabin on the island where he lived until his death in 1842.
