Garwood & Cooper Additional notes - Zimri L. Garwood, one of Joseph Garwood’s sons, spent the early part of his life in Pokagon and was even Treasurer of the Township in 1839. He went to California about 1850 as a single man. Concurrently Daniel Howe Kirk, son of Thomas Jefferson Kirk of Giles County, Virginia and grandson of John Kirk of the same place and born in Fauquier County Virginia, headed west from Missouri at the same time. Daniel was recently married and had an infant son. He died in Wyoming. His wife continued west to California with the baby, William. His wife, Rhoda Miller Kirk, married Zimri Garwood in California and these pictures are from the collection of one of their children. Rhoda is my great great grandmother. I am descended from her first child William Kirk Garwood. By pure chance, I live in Fauquier County, Virginia. Daniel Howe Kirk was related to the Kirk and Emmons families that came to Cass and Berrien counties in the 1830s. A generation before the same families were together in Fauquier County. They moved to Giles County just after the revolution. So it makes sense that the cousins in Michigan and in laws in Missouri knew each other and probably put Zimri and Rhoda in touch.
