Ephraim Reader ,who settled in Grant township over 43 years ago passed away at his home at the corner of Woodland Ave and Third Street Cass City Friday Mar 9 at the age of 81 . He had been sick several weeks and his family believed for some time this would be his last illness.Ephraim Reader was born at Scugog Island, Ontario, on Sept. 26, 1841. On Feb. 28, 1865, he was united in marriage with Miss Maria Gamble.They left Scugog Island in the fall of 1879 and went to Huron county, Mi Mr. Reader purchased a farm in Grant township on his arrival in Huron county and here he and his family, by industry and frugality, developed a fine tract of Iand from the wilderness of the early days. Mrs.Reader passed away 30 years ago. Mr.Reader left the farm about five years ago and he and his daughter, MissEthel, have since made their home in Cass City.Of the eleven children born to Mr.and Mrs. Reader, four died in infancy.Those who remain to mourn the loss of their father are Mrs. Amos Hoffman of Watertown, Frank Reader of Grant township, Albert Reader of Roseburg, Mrs. Malcolm Crawford of .Cass City, Mrs. Wesley Harder of Detroit, Miss Ethel Reader of Cass City and Mrs. Alfred Maharg of Gagetown.Funeral services were held at the ME church at cass City on Tuesday afternoon,Rev I.W. Cargo officiated assisted by Rev F.L. Pohly Intermet was held in Elkland cementary.Ephraim Reader was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and sturdy constitution, and he continued to be active pursuits till long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. He was variably a good neighbor and a kind father. Since early manhood he has been a member of the M. E. church,and has been affiliated with congregations of that denomination at Scugog Island, Beauley and Cass City |
