LDS Genealogical Website: http://www.familysearch.org/ =============================================================== NOTES: The Orlando and Lucinda (SHOOK) KEYES family arrived at Climax Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI, from Cambria, Niagara Co., NY, in 1851. Orlando was a cooper by trade and taught the skill to his son Lyman. Orlando became interested and active in the Methodist faith, of which he became a minister, and for which he organized a class at the Wilson schoolhouse in West Climax about 1858. He joined the 12th Michigan Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1864 along with his new son-in-law James POWERS, and was promoted from private to Chaplain of the 12th by Michigan’s wartime governor Blair Austin, when the current chaplain resigned. Though both men survived the Civil War, Orlando died shortly thereafter from dysentery contracted in service. Daughter Irena would reside in Climax Twp. for most of her life. Son Lyman would pause at Belmont, KS, on his way to permanently settle at Clinton Twp., Henry Co., MO. Daughter Sarah would marry and move to Charlotte, Eaton Co., where she lost two of her three children to an 1879 diphtheria epidemic. She and Riley PAGE later divorced. After her marriage to Harvey O. CLINE, the family moved to Lansing, Ingham Co., MI. They moved to Mason after Harvey became sheriff of Ingham Co. Sarah died of cancer between H. O. CLINE’s two terms in that office. The rest of the KEYES children appear to have remained in the Climax area.
