THE SEBEWA RECOLLECTOR, Bulletin of the The Sebewa Center Association, Bulletin of The Sebewa Center Association, June 1974, Volume 9, Number 6

 ANNOUNCEMENT

The Annual Meeting of the Sebewa Center Association will be held at Sebewa Center Saturday, June 8, 1974 with a potluck dinner at noon.

A short business meeting and a program will follow.  The terms of office of Mabel Ralston as secretary-treasurer and Richard Droste as board member expire and the offices are to be filled by election for the three-year terms.  A nominating committee will present a slate of nominations and other nominations may be made from the floor at the meeting.  If you wish to make a nomination, please make sure that your candidate will accept the office if elected.

THIS DATE BEGINS THE TENTH YEAR OF THE SEBEWA CENTER ASSOCIATION.  During the past year (June to June) we reached a membership of 360 persons.  Membership is attained by payment of the dues of $1.00 per person for the year.  Some have already paid for the 1974-75 year.  If you pay by mail before the meeting, you may send dues to Miss Mabel Ralston, secretary-treasurer, at R 2, Lake Odessa, MI  48849.  You will be advised of the name and address of the new secretary-treasurer in the August issue of this bulletin.  The higher postage rates make it more important than ever that the Mr. & Mrs. Dues of $1.00 each be paid because postage alone now costs us 60 cents a year for each bulletin mailed.

THE SEBEWA CENTER SCHOOL REUNION

This, the second Saturday in June, in conjunction with the annual meeting is the 51st anniversary of the Sebewa School Reunion.  All former pupils and teachers of the school and friends of the community are invited.

IT TOOK 100 YEARS

A short time back the Williams-Steeger Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) was enacted into law by Congress.  Directives giving the rules for employers (including farmers hiring help) in safety and health precautions for their employees are beginning to come from the OSHA Administration.  Copies of the act may be obtained by writing the Department of Labor, Washington, D. C.  The tragedy related below from the PORTLAND ADVERTISER of February 22, 1870 could well have been prevented, had the safety regulations prevailed at that time.

ACCIDENT.  February 22, 1870.  Many of our citizens remember Mr. J. C. Mannery, who, two or three years ago, was the owner of the grist mill in Sebewa known as the Friend Mill.  After leaving Sebewa, Mr. Mannery went to Charlotte in Eaton County.  On the 9th inst. While engaged in work in what is known as the Jerusalem Mills, his clothing caught on a shaft and after being whirled over several times, he was carried by the belt to the top of the building.  He was found with his body mangled and his bones broken in several places.  Accidents of this kind are of frequent occurrence and persons standing around moving machinery cannot be too careful in keeping their clothing clear of revolving machinery.  We have often noticed the carelessness of visitors in the mills and other places of that nature and have expected before this to have been called upon to record accidents of this kind occurring here.

THE SEBEWA OTTER

From the hand-me-down stories of the old timers, nobody seems to remember hearing one to indicate the otter as an animal native to Sebewa.  When a dead otter was found last March “between the headwaters of Libhart and Tupper creeks on Shilton Road”, as was told in the Ionia Sentinel, it was a surprise to many to learn the location was a half mile north of Sebewa Center.  Wilbur Gierman found the otter in his  corn field in a good state of preservation near the half mile line about 300 feet west of the road.  Conservation officer, Bob Green, suggested he would see that the pelt would reach the taxidermist and the skeleton would become a part of the Lakewood collection.

SOME PROPERTY CHANGES HANDS

Howard Cross has moved to a mobile home at Sebewa Corners after selling his farm to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Phillips.  The farm had been in the Cross family since 1879.

Dennis and Ida Petrie have sold their house and ten acres to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Showerman.  By this move, Ralph returns to the homestead of his grandfather, Ernest Showerman and great grandfather, Orlando Showerman.  Dennis and Ida plan to move to a house they have purchased in Lake Odessa.

DEATHS OF THE PERIOD JUST PASSED

Deaths of interest to the Sebewa community of late have been Eva (Mrs. Dan) Austin, Iril Shilton, Orilla (Shilton) Raison, Charles Cook, Walter Warner and Glenn Fender.

THE NASHVILLE FESTIVAL

June 7, 8, and 9 are gala days for Nashville with parade, horse shoe pitching tournament, ice cream social, flea market, baked goods sale and art show as the attractions.  All are welcome.

THE 1880 CENSUS

It was with some hesitation that I started to include the 1880 Sebewa Census in this collection of historical information—mostly because of its bulk.  1880 was about the peak year for population in Sebewa with around 1600 people.  Later this figure dropped below 1,000.  Westward emigration accounted for some of the loss.  Most of the 1600 depended on agriculture for their support and many families were “getting by” farming 20 acres or less.  Many of the larger farms used hired day labor as can be seen in the census record and often there was a maid or “hired girl”.

Each grouping of names indicated a dwelling unit.  The census is more than a list of names for, with a little imagination, it becomes a series of family pictures.  The abbreviations used in the columns after the age column indicate the state or country of birth, place of birth of father, and place of birth of mother.  The state abbreviations are standard for Zip Code.  C is Canada; E, England; S. Scotland or Switzerland; I, Ireland; and G for Germany.  If you know a few family locations you can follow census taker, John Friend, on his travels about the township.

A little more than one third of the 1600 names appear in this installment.  The remainder will appear in later issue.

If you did not see the 1880 census here and have it available for reference, the probability is good that you never would see it.

UNITED STATES CENSUS, SEBEWA TOWNSHIP, IONIA COUNTY, MICHIGAN  1880:  Note:  In the census list, only the Luscher family were of SWISS origin.  The other “S” abbreviations indicate Scotland.

In the census list, only the Luscher family were of SWISS origin.  The other “S” abbreviations indicate Scotland.

DITCH CLEANING

Initial steps have been taken to let a contract for cleaning the drainage ditches of the central part of Sebewa Township known as the Gunn-Ramsey, Gunn-Luscher and Gunn-Ralston drains.  The ditches were last cleaned of silt in 1937.  Cleaning should bring some soggy land back into production and enable farmers to work the ground earlier in the spring without crushing the underlying clay into adobe.  Some sizeable cottonwood trees, willows and others have grown along the banks since the 1937 job.

Elem Tran credited the original digging of these ditches with horse drawn shovels and scrapers with introducing quack grass into this area.  Hay, shipped in for the workmen horses, brought the seed for the quack and soon it was on its way to everywhere it went.  I recall my grandfather, Charles Gierman, working with a shovel and rake to collect all the roots from little patches of quack grass, to keep it from spreading further in the fields.  Also I remember my grandmother, Lydia Meyers, being critical of Ben Lowe for being careless about dragging through a quack grass patch and spreading the quack to the rest of the field when he worked her farm on shares.

WHERE WENT THE ENERGY CRISIS?

The emphasis seems to change with the season.  Michigan’s great tourist industry must be fed with whatever gasoline is needed.  With a wink at the speed limit, traffic has begun to speed up with the rising spring temperatures.  Are we heading for another winter where we are told we do not live right if we have not shivered a good part of each day?  Do you recall the fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper?
