Biography of Horace BARTLETT,
of Dryden Twp, Lapeer County, MI

Horace BARTLETT was born on 25 Jul 1795 in Charlestown, Cheshire (later part of Sullivan) County, NH. His parents were Jacob BARTLETT and Patience JUDEVINE. He died on 23 Dec 1888 in Riceville, Crawford County, PA, at age 93.

Horace served 3 months in the War of 1812, from 14 Sep 1814 to 13 Dec 1814. He served as a Private, in Captain Nathan Gliddens' company, belonging to Charlestown, in the 1st Regiment, New Hampshire Detachment Militia.

Between 1815 and 1820, Horace moved from Charlestown, NH to Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Horace married Sally WOODWORTH, who was born 28 Apr 1801 in VT or NH or LC (Lower Canada), the daughter of Elijah and Betsey WOODWORTH. They had several children in Canada, from 1822 to 1838, and moved to Genesee County, NY in 1839, but soon settled in Oakland or Lapeer, MI in 1840, and there they had 1 more child.

Some accounts say that they came to Lapeer County first, in 1840, but the 1840 US Census has the family of 10 in Addison Township, Oakland County, MI. By 1850 they had settled in Dryden Township, Lapeer County, MI for good.

The 1863 plat map (above) shows several BARTLETT properties near the village of Dryden, in the northeastern part of Dryden Township.
