Robert A. Moon was born on January 11, 1831 in Elbridge, Onondaga Co., NY to Samuel Joseph Moon and Eliza Germond. (The Germond Family was very prominent in Dutchess Co. NY) In about 1858 he married Susan Jane Granger. After the birth of their first son in 1859 they moved Michigan. Robert became the first township supervisor for Mecosta. In 1862 he was commissioned a lieutenant in the 6th Michigan Calvary. During the progress of the war he was captured by the confederates and made a prisoner. He spent 18 months as a POW in Libby prison. He was discharged honorably with the rank of Captain in 1863. Robert A. lived in the Big Rapids area for 47 years, where he was engaged in the lumbering business. Robert and his wife Susan had four sons; Lafayette A. Moon born June 1859, Herbert E. Moon born May 1861, Robert G. Moon born April 1863 and William S. Moon born April 11, 1871. Susan died in 1885 and Robert married for a second time Josephine Eunice Gore Braman, widow of Walter F. Braman with two sons. (sons; George Gara Braman born 1878 and Harrie Giles Braman born 1879) Robert A. and Josephine had one son together Phillip S. Moon born October 2, 1888. Robert A. died at his home in Big Rapids on December 9, 1906 at the age of 76. At the time of his death two sons, Lafayette A. and Robert G. were living in Texas, Herbert E. was living in Alaska and William S. lived in the Cadillac area. I don't know Phillips whereabouts. Roberts Parent's (Samuel and Eliza) moved from NY out west to Iowa. Samuel died in 1832. Eliza remarried a man with the last name of Velie. She died in Tabor Mills, Iowa on July 12, 1873. Robert had Two brothers, Perry H. Moon and Thomas J. Moon and one sister Mary J. Moon. One brother lived in Missouri and one in Iowa. Whereabouts of Mary Jane unknown. |
