These names I have compiled from "Michigan Soldiers and Sailors", published by the State of Michigan in 1915, known commonly as the "Brown Books". They are a copy the "Muster Out" rolls containing the name and basic record of every man and his disposition, including death and the reason thereof who fought for a Michigan unit or a Michigan citizen enrolled in a unit representing a different state or the Federal Forces.
They are a 46 Volume set available in many libraries across the country.
The states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas have all published these rolls.
The state of New York, Delaware, and Maryland did not consider these rolls important enough to publish.
If you are looking for a specific soldier, and don't know his regiment, it would be easier to e-mail me (ONE MAN AT A TIME, please). Company F, 2nd Infantry contains the name of 1 woman, Sarah Edmonds Seelye of Flint. The only confirmed female combatant from Michigan, she used the name Frank Thompson. Thus far, these files contain the names of 88,558Site Founded by:
Don HarveyEd and Lois Russell helped me in recording gravesites.
When researching a soldier in the governmental archives, it is essential that his regiment be known. I recommend that after you have confirmed his regiment and company from my rosters that you "click" on"How to research a soldier"
