Bloomer Township
Montcalm County, Michigan

The settlements in Bloomer township, are Carson City, and Butternut. The first settlement was located along the Fish Creek and was established in 1852. It was named by one of the first settlers whose home was Carson City, Nevada. Both saw mills and lumbering were profitable ventures in this settlement. It was incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1960.

The name Bloomer originated at a local dance party where several ladies appeared in their bloomers. The post office (1858-1886) was called Bloomer Centre, the name later shortened to Bloomer.

  • Butternut was a station on the Toledo, Saginaw & Muskegon (now Grand Trunk) Railroad, in Bloomer Township, in 1888; storekeep Jesse S. Dennis became its first postmaster on April 19, 1888, the office operating until August 31, 1955; so named from its being the site of a butternut cheese factory.
