Pioneer Life in the Big Dane Settlement-Recollections of August Rasmussen

The settlements in Montcalm township are known as Turk Lake and Gowen.

Gowen was a lumbering center around the year1847, first known as Gregor's Mills and later, Kaywood. Gowen was named for founder Colonel James Gowen, a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Gowen House Hotel, located on Pine St., was built about 1871.
It burned in 1904.
