Welcome to this website which is a part of MIGenWeb and USGenWeb, a network of websites that provide free online genealogical information. This county is currently available for adoption. For more information contact our state coordinator.
Muskegon County was organized February 4, 1859. Prior to that date most of the county was a part of Ottawa County. The countyseat is Muskegon.
The name of the county comes from the Ojibwa word mashkig which means marsh. Along with the name of the city and county Muskegon is also the name of the river which empties into Lake Michigan after passing through Muskegon and Muskegon Lake.
