OGEMAW COUNTY, MICHIGAN

CEMETERY RECORDS

As the first logging camps began to appear in Ogemaw County, burial places for those unfortunates who died by accident or disease were not a priority. Often, crude graves were dug nearby and wooden crosses or large stones marked the final resting place. As more permanent settlers began to arrive, specific areas were set aside for burial needs. Tombstones and wooden crosses stood in testimony of the difficult life endured by these early pioneers.

By 1880, land had been set aside for several cemeteries near churches or settlements. Although "backyard burials" still existed (especially for babies), most burials were in these cemeteries. Unfortunately, stones have been removed and wooden crosses have rotted or burned in the many local forest fires. Death and burial records have been lost or
destroyed, so many burials now are unmarked and unrecorded.

Several individuals have compiled these records for your use. If you know of incorrect entries or additional burials not listed, please contact the Rose City Historical Society.
