By 1880, land had been set aside for several cemeteries near churches or settlements. Although "backyard burials" still existed (especially for babies), most burials were in these cemeteries. Unfortunately, stones have been removed and wooden crosses have rotted or burned in the many local forest fires. Death and burial records have been lost or
destroyed, so many burials now are unmarked and unrecorded.
