Bell School, District 4, was located in the Northwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter of Section 36,
Township 23 North, Range 3 East, Pettit Road between Sage Lake Road and Twin Lake Road, Cumming Township,
Ogemaw County. There is some question as to whether the original log building was possibly located on
Pettit Road between Twin Lake Road and Peters Road, as shown on the old 1903 plat map. There is also
mention that it may have been called Henderson Lake School at that time. The land for the brick
school was purchased from Joseph McNiell for $25.00 on November 29, 1907 and the building was
built by Frank Lovewell of brick. The school was in use until October, 1945; the District was annexed to
the Rose City District in 1947; and the property is now in
private ownership. Again, records are sparse and if you have any information on the Bell School
you are asked to contact the Ogemaw County Coordinator,
Grace Dooley. Most of the existing records have been compiled by The Rose City Area Historical Society, Post Office Box 736, Rose City, MI 48654 |
