Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church CHAPTER THREE THE FOUNDING OF THE CHURCH The Civil War had come to its close. The Union established in 1776 that threatened to fall apart had been kept intact at a terrible price, but slavery had been abolished, and that was great gain. In that war, both the Iowa and Michigan Dutch settlements produced many soldiers to serve in the defense of the Union, some never returning alive from the battlefront. None of these represented the Harderwyk congregation, for it did not yet exist. The first of the settlers, as noted in the previous chapter, came in 1866. They came as individual family units, but most of them from the same area. By 1878 there were enough families living north of Black Lake that they considered organizing a congregation. The trip to Holland on Sunday was often a difficult chore. It was a long walk, and riding equipment and shelter for horses was not adequate. Hence, they built a small church on the corner of what is now Lakewood Boulevard and 168th St. It cannot be ascertained what the first roads were named in the 70’s. In the year 1880 a ship bearing the name Alpena, braving a fierce storm, sank in the area where this road met the shore of Lake Michigan. As the result, it came to be known as Alpena Road. Early in the century it became Lakewood Boulevard, though it is a single road and always has been. The church they erected was a simple rectangular building, had a little steeple, and was located east of the cemetery. The congregation was part of the Reformed Church. When it became Christian Reformed, it vacated that building to erect another. The original church building was moved to River Avenue and First Street sometime after 1912 and became the North Side Christian Reformed Chapel. Eventually, the people who worshipped there became the Calvary Christian Reformed Church on Beeline Road. The chapel was torn down in recent years. These early settlers acquired pieces of land and began to farm; a map from 1896 contains names of most of the pioneers. The tax roll in 1912 indicates that they owned forty to eighty acres of land for the most part. One notable exception was J. G. Witteveen Who paid taxes on 260 acres. Most of the farmers raised corn and other grains, as well as potatoes, and also cultivated berries. They kept a few cows and often hunted. About 1880, wealthy people began to build summer homes near the channel that directed the water of Black Lake into Lake Michigan; these farmers supplied them in their need for fresh produce. The channel at that time flowed into the big lake north of what is now Holland State Park. This small Reformed congregation had no minister of its own, and certain men with ability quite naturally became leaders. Most prominent among them was Jacob Witteveen. He and others must have talked often about the church and religious conditions. No doubt, they read De Hope, which was the official magazine of the Reformed Church in the West. They knew there was discontent in many hearts and homes with respect to the toleration of members of secret societies within the Church as well as doctrinal deviations. Lodgism was one of the factors which led to the Secession of 1857 and the formation of the Christian Reformed Church, though the act of secession does not mention it in so many words. In the years following, the western churches (in Michigan and Wisconsin) repeatedly raised the question at Synodical meetings: should something be done about it? Synod on several occasions acknowledge that Lodgism was an evil thing, but left it to the individual congregations to determine whether it should be tolerated locally. After some years of futile protests, several congregations and hundreds of families left the Reformed Church and joined their brethren who had established their own denomination in 1857. Some of these churches, the most prominent among them being the Van Raalte church in Holland and Coldbrook in Grand Rapids, were independent for a short time. That seems to have been the case with our little church too. The earliest minutes we possess are dated December 19, 1880. On that day q meeting was held at which Rev. G. Hoeksema, the minister of Central Ave. Christian Reformed Church, preached a sermon based on 1 Peter 2:7. The "Articles of Union" were read, approved and signed. Trustees were elected: Jacon Witteveen, Jan Witteveen, and C. Dykgraaf. Jacob Witteveen thereupon sold the ground on which the church stood for $1.00; this was documented by J. Garvelink of Graafschap, a Notary Public. The newly organized church decided, furthermore, to demand the keys to the church building and to propose to those who had previously used it that the assets be divided. Should this have been refused, the matter was to be put into the hands of the judge to determine who was the rightful owner. In this connection, it is worthy of note that the very first minutes in which we find the above information were written by Rev. G. Hoeksema and are prefaced by the words: "Trustee book of the Holland Christian Reformed Church on Lake Shore (spelled ‘Tjoer’)." What happened during the course of the next 22 months is unknown, as there are no minutes to enlighten us. Nick Stielstra, who wrote the history of the church at the time of the Semi-Centennial, simply writes: "The pioneers first met in a log building for public worship and joined the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1879 a church building was erected and Jacob Witteveen laid the cornerstone. In 1880 they left the Reformed Church." Affiliation with that denomination was brief. The next minutes were written on October 9, 1882, recording what was done b y the congregation at a meeting held in the home of Evert Vanden Brink. From these few lines, it is evident that the effort to retain ownership of the church building they had erected failed. Now we read of a new church and instruction to the carpenter about how to construct the platform and to put wainscoting all around. At that meeting, the people decided by majority vote to consider themselves an independent congregation. There were three votes against this motion. On December 14, another meeting was held; at that time the newly built church was dedicated, and the group was called the Haderwyk Christian Reformed Church. On that occasion, Rev. C. Bode brought a message based on Psalm 133. Two elders were elec ted, Jacob Vanden Brink and Jacob C. Ratering. Rev. R.T. Kuiper was also present. The :"Articles of Association" are to be found in the minute book in English, evidently written by Garvelink with indelible ink, and the names of all heads of families, 23 in all. Vanden Brink 1845-1926 (The dates have been supplied by Mrs. Jacob Dreyer) The minutes show that in November of that same year $200.00 was borrowed from Jan Koffer at 8% interest. The church needed this to help finance the building of the church. The fact that more money was needed is clear from the decision taken at the congregation meeting the following New Year’s Day to petition Classis to advise the several congregation to take up offerings for our Building Fund.
