CHAPMAN'S HISTORY OF KENT COUNTY, Pg. 1312 - "Timothy Carpenter was born in Cayuga Co., NY.  His parents were of English extraction.  Timothy was a farmer, weaver and shoemaker.  He and Melinda were the parents of twelve children all born in New York State.  When Mr. Carpenter brought his family into this country only the thoroughfare known as the "Old State Road" was laid out and in operation.  The ways of communication otherwise were Indian trails."
