February 24, 1917 - Mrs. Clara M. Dunning, age 69 years old, died at her home at 19th Barney Avenue in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, Friday morning after short illness. Mrs. Dunning was born in New York.

Coming to this city 40 years ago. Later she moved to Cooperville, Mich. Mrs. Dunning

married George Dunning in Michigan several years ago.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Butterfield of Grand

Rapid, Mrs. Harley Davenport of Ravenna and Mrs. Maude Eistedt of this city.

Fours sons, Charles, Ernest and Stephen of Muskegon and William of Ravenna. Also

3 sisters, Mrs. Emma Patterson of Ravenna, Mrs. Libbey Stamp of Cooperville and Mrs. Laiel

Hachett of New York, and four brothers, Joseph, Frank, Emmett and Dee Truax all

from Louisiana, also survive. Interment will be held at Cooperville Cemetery in

Cooperville, Michigan in Ottawa County.

MAY BUTTERFIELD SPOHN, 82, of Academia, died Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Northside

Manor Rest Home after a long illness on Wednesday October 31, 1956. She was a

member of the Seventh-da y Adventist Church.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Carter of Battle Creek, Michigan six

sons, Grant Butterfield of Pittsburgh, Stephen of Washington D.C., Harry of

Jamestown, Herbert Butterfield of Maltland, Florida, George Butterfield of

Jamestown, New, York and Elwin Butterfield with the armed forces and stationed in London, England, and a sister, Maude Kibbey of Lansing, Michigan. Burial will be in

H.H.BUTTERFILED FORMER LOCAL RESIDENT, DIES - Herbert H. Butterfield, 70, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, formerly of this city died, September20, 1942 at the Washington D.C. Sanitarium. Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield had gone to Washington to visit their two sons, George and Stephen Butterfield, and to Celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on the day before his death.

believe he was married in Pennsylvania because he had a daughter , her name was

Amber Dunning and she was born in 1897 in Pennsylvania. In 1928 he re-married

Frances M. Lasiewic who is Ernest Harry Dunning wife mother.

Ernest Dunning was a streetcar conductor in Pennsylvania. He worked in a

coal yard in Muskegon, Michigan. He moved to Lansing, Michigan in 1927. He

Worked for the Reo Plant and also helped build the viaduct on Pennsylvania Ave.

next to Potter Park. He married Frances M. Lsaiewicze in Lansing, Mich on November 3rd, 1928. She was Ernest's third wife. His wife Edith was a good cook and a good

mother. She used to go berry picking and take her kids with her to help her

pick berries. She lov ed to have her kids around her. She loved to bake and can. She also did laundry for other people.

806 Baker Street died Monday morning. He had been a resident of Lansing for 10

years, and employed by the Olds Motor Works.

Mr. Dunning is survived by his wife Mrs. Frances M. Dunning, three sons,

Ernest Harry of Muskegon, and Joseph and Eugene Dunning of Lansing; five

daughters, Amber Dunning of Wajemo, Michigan and Pearl, Frances and Elsie

Dunning of Lansing and Edith Dunning of Grand Rapids. Ernest Dunning had three brothers, William and

called by death. Mrs. Ernest Dunning, age 43 years old, died last night at her

home on 673 Leonard Street. She was born at Bay Mills, Muskegon on Sept 08,

1882. Mrs. Dunning is survived by her husband and seven children; Mrs. L.D.

Hasbrook and Frances, Edith and Elsie Dunning and Ernest, Joseph and Eugene

Dunning of Muskegon; also Mrs. Dunning's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McQueen of

Montague, Michigan also four brothers, Duff of Montague, and Joseph, Nelson and Omer of Muskegon. Mrs. Dunning had two sisters; Mrs. John Church and Mrs. Rose Witham;

***** STATE JOURNAL July 21, 1948 ***** Stephen Raymond Dunning was

killed in traffic accident late Tuesday in the Lansing area. Three other lost

their life in other state. Stephen R.Dunning, 66 years old, from Millett, was

believe to have bee n instantly killed when his car crashed into a telephone pole Tuesday afternoon on highway M-104 four tenths of a mile east of Hollister Road in

Victor Township, Clinton County. Dunning who was riding alone at the time of the

mishap, snapped of a telephone pole, and continued another 20 feet before stopping,

according to State Police. Officers said Dunning suffered a broken neck, there

were no skid mark, this fact led them to surmise that the driver might have

fallen asleep at the wheeMr. Dunning was born in Muskegon, January 21, 1882 and had been a resident of the Lansing area for the past 34 years. He operation an oil station at Millett.

Leura died in Houghton Lake, at the King Nursing Home. She was a very

talent lady, she painted dishes and sold them to department store in Lansing,

Michigan. Interment will in Oakwood Cemetery at Grand Ledge, Michigan. there

was no notic e in the paper.

parents and in the1920 census she was in Muskegon Co., Muskegon City and she was 32 yr old. 1930 census she was in Ingham Co., Michigan and she was 42 yr old.

***** STATE JOURNAL ***** January 17, 1961 Mrs. Maude Kibbey, 73 year

old died, at her home 15677 Grove Rd, on Monday. She had been a resident of

Lansing for 35 years, coming here from Grand Rapids.

Surviving are four sons, LeRoy G. Kibbey, Lester L. Kibbey both from

Lansing and Kenneth and Ivan Eistedt of Muskegon Heights. Also six

grandchildren. Maude was a member of the Walker Memorial Baptist Church.

Interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery at Lansing, Michigan.

Lansing, Michigan that Elmer J. Kibbey was killed in Tampa, Florida. He will be

buried at Lansing, Michigan in Evergreen, Cemetery.

old, of Mona Lake, died in Mercy Hospital, after an illness of one week. Mr.

Eistedt was born on the 2nd of December, 1875 in Cooperville, where he has spent

the most of his life. He came to Muskegon Heights from Fremont in 1927. He was a

farmer and worked in a store. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Arbiter

Lodge of Grand Rapids. Mr. Eistedt was employed by the Schoenberg Meat Market,

in Muskegon Heights.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth of Grand Rapids and Ivan of Muskegon.

Three brothers, Emil R. of Muskegon and Gustane Theodore both from Cooperville,

one sister Mrs. Gysbert Delkelp of Cooperville Interment will be held in

Cooperville Cemetery at Ottawa Co. Michigan.

East Forest Ave died Wednesday evening at his home after a lingering illness. He

was born in New York on the 13th of March 1867, coming to Michigan with his

parents when he was two years old, and residing locally since that time. Mr. Dunning was married to Cora Keift on the 5th of June, 1897 in Grand Haven, Mi. He has not been actively employed for the past 10 years.

Surviving are his wife Cora, and five sons, Charles of Kalamazoo and

George, Robert, William and Harold Dunning all from Ravenna, also four

daughters, Mrs. George Price of Ravenna, Mrs. Frank Brown of Kalamazoo, Mrs.

Herman Manning of Grand Rapid s and Mrs. Harold Paeth of Port Huron, Michigan. Also two brothers,

Charles of Fruitport and Stephen of Lansing and two sisters, Mrs. Elmer Kibbey

of Lansing and Mrs. May Butterfield of New York and nine grandchildren.

Interment will be at Coopersville Cemetery, Cooperville, Michigan.

He was reported to be handsome and sang in the bars. He lost the family farm betting on a horse.

not writing my individual notes to each of you this years, but some of the news

I have to tell you about is sad, and it would be difficult for me to write it

over and over

2 CONC . My father passed away suddenly of a heart attack on October 2, 1981

and this has left a substantial void in all our lives. for some of you who did

know him, you would have liked to. Of those of you who did, you will know just

what I mean.

2 CONT Elwin was quite an individual, he had a great sense of humor. We called

his jokes "Al's tales" because he often forgot the punch line, but had a great

time trying to make one up. He loved to don a frillly hat or funny glasses with

fake nose an

2 CONC d walk in a room to sit down nonchalantly to see how I long people took

to notice. I own my own sense of humor and interest in music to my father. He

taught me to play the piano and encouraged me to sing at an early age. He

tickled the ivorie

2 CONC s for hour because he had a wonderful talent of playing by ear.

Recently, he was learning to play the organ, and he sang in men's barbershop

singing organizations for years.

2 CONT My father was meticulous in all he did, special in his work, the Air

Force for 21 years, civil service for 12 years and H & R Block for the last few

years. He had received many government awards for outstanding leadership. He

also took his hom

2 CONC e responsibilities seriously, spending hours designing and planting

flower beds or putting up hundreds of Christmas lights. He was the model

husband. He got up every morning and served my mother hot tea in bed. After

retirement he made his brea

2 CONC kfast for them on their patio. My mother was alway his English queen

and he was ever her adoring knight. He was loving father, always supportive,

encouraging, protective, and appreciative. He was a great listener and

interesting conversationa

2 CONC list. He was a super grandfather. He like being called "Uncle Al"

rather than Grandpa. He enjoyed jogging with Todd and playing the piano with

Shelly. He will be missed.

***** STATE JOURNAL ***** November 22, 1941 Funeral service for L.D. Hasbrook 40, died suddenly at Jackson Thursday evening, will be held Sunday. Pallbearers will be Lewis Meyers, Mac Cready Scoville, and Mauni Reed, and Lionel Hasbrook, Georg e Banker and David Gallaway.

Mr. Hasbrook is survived by the widow, Neva, a daughter, Jo Ann; a son James; the mother, Mrs. Metta Copp of Lansing; a brother, Earl Hasbrook of Clark Lake and two sisters, Mrs. Jewell Vian of Okemos and Mrs. Beverly Boston of Chicago. Intermen t will be in the Leek Cemetery near Okemos. (Sec 4 Lot 314)

Cordon had been employed for 11 years by the board of water and light commissioners.He had been a clerk in the line department and recently was transferred to duties in street lighting division. Radford was a twin brother of Carlton C. Radford, 10 23 West Washenaw street both of whom were widely known when students at Lansing Central high school where they played football later starring with the Albion college team and with the Durant All-Stars, local professional team.

Cordon was with the Troop L. of the 12th cavalry. His troop was engaged in border service in this country durning the War.

***** STATE JOURNAL ***** Cordon W. Radford, 41 years old employee of the Lansing board of water and electric light commissioners, drowned Sunday afternoon about 3 o'clock when he stepped into a hole in the Grand river where he was bathing. Stat e police said Radford, who resided at 1715 Donors street, was wading in five feet of water with Leo Smedley, 9, of 419 Brynford avenue riding on his back, when he stepped into a hole 10 feet in depth. BOY THOUGHT MAN "FOOLING" The boy was quote d as saying he thought Radford was fooling when he fell. The child made his way to shore, where he notified other members of the party, including Radford wife, Pearl; Leonard Boylan, and Elsie Voss and Edith Shelp both of 604 E.Kalamazoo street.

Surviving are the widow, Pearl; a daughter, Roberta Jean; the mother, Mrs. Addie Radford of Lansing and a brother, Carlton of Lansing. He was a member of the Central Methodist church and a resident of Lansing for 30 years. Interment will be hel d in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Lansing, Michigan.

Frances was married and living in Rantoul, Illinois with Dad parents and she was 22 yr old.

March 13, 1981 Frances D (Dunning) Smedley talk about her parents Edith

Ada (McQueen) and Ernest Willard Dunning to her daughter Darlene (Smedley)

Huggins. This is what she said about her mother Edith Ada McQueen.

" She was a

house helper at home she enjoyed played with us kids, she was a good cook. If she

was invited out for dinner she all ways took us kids also, she use to go berry

picking and she would take us kids with her to help her pick berries and she

would bake pie s and can blue berries, she did a lot of canney and she did washing for a

couple people, and she was real good to us kids.

2 CONT My father Ernest W. Dunning he was a street car conductor in

Pennylvania, work for the city and at the Reo and then at the olds when he died,

he also help build the vie dock on Pennsylvaina Avenue and worked at a coal yard

in Muskegon, Michigan

like to play cards at home. He didn't do much talking, but when he did he meant

at Jersey City, N.J. He had been serving in France and Germany for fifteen

months with the 716th Railway Operating Battalion. For his service he received

France and Rhineland and Central Europe, the good conduct and victory ribbons.

loved her grandchildren, family and friends. She enjoyed bead work and various

types of crafts . She had been employed at Lansing Stamping, Globe Products, and

Phillips Mfg. The daughter of Ernest W. and Edith A. (McQueen) Dunning of Muskegon,

both whom were taken from her at a very early age. She is survived by; 3

daughters, Beverly J. (Richard) Kelley, Fl, Pamela S. Many, Lansing, and Cindy

L. (Jan) Burnett, Bat; 2 step-children, Michael J. (Virginia) Nurmikko, Clarkston, and Judith

M. (Ron) McClure, WI; 9 grandchildren, Marica, David, Kari, Scott, Jeffrey,

67 wife of Herman A. Manning, passed away Wednesday afternoon at the family home 610 Parkside Avenue in Standale.

Besides her husband, she survived by two sons, Frederick T. and Robert J.

Manning, five daughters, Mrs. Everett (Virigina) Dukes, Mrs. Donald P. Leow and

Mrs. Richard (Jean) Popma and Mrs. Ronald (Kilo) Bursma all from Grand Rapids,

11 grandchildr en and four brothers Charles of Allegan and Harold M. Dunning of Grand Rapids, George Dunning of Spring Lake, and Robert of Muskegon, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Price and Mrs. Gertrude Sundberg of Muskegon. Interment will be held in

Chapel Hill Cemet ery at Grand Rapids, Michigan.

NOTE: She was the best Grandma any one could ever wish for. We all loved her very much.

years old passed away Friday morning, after a six months illness. He was born in

Moorland Township, on the 25th of December, 1906. He was educated in Kalamazoo

and Muskego n school. On May 8th, 1937 he married the former Muriel Zipp in Muskegon. Robert was employed by the Westran Crop from 1936 until 1972, when he retired. Mr. Dunning was an active in sports and participating in boxing, in the Elks

Golden Gloves tournaments. He also manage the junior boys football teams at Westran. He was also in auxiliary policeman and was active in Civil Defense during W.W.II. Mr. Dunning was Lake Tahoe assistant Marshall after his retirement, and has

worked with youth gr oups for many years. He was a member of Crestwood United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Police, and Muskegon Heights, Eagles.

Survivors included his wife, Muriel, two sons, Richard of Norton Shores

and Thomas Z. of North Muskegon, seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Clara

Price of Marne and Mrs. Gertrude Sundberg of Muskegon, with whom Mr. Dunning

made his home for several years, also two brothers, Charles Dunning of Allegan and Harold Dunning of Grand Rapids. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery at Muskegon,

Michigan.

She was born February 24, 1912 in Petoskey, and lived most of her life in the

Muskegon area. She worked as a secretary at both Sealed Power and the Friend of the Court, was a member of Crestwood United Methodist Church, the Naomi Circle and the Friendship Class of the church, and had been the secretary for the County

Retirees. The former Muriel Zipp, she married Robert W. Dunning on May 8, 1937. He preceded her in death on January 3, 1975. Survivors include 1 son, Thomas & Kathy Dunning of Allegan,

grandchildren, Debbie, Karen, Tom, Sue, Abe, Andy, Aaron, Lori, David, and Marc,

and great grandchildren, Kelly, Jason, Matthew, Casey, Eric, Scott, Nathan,

Kevin, Christopher, Gabryal and Chloe, and great- great-grandchildren, Cameron, Ashley, and D'Anthony, favorite nephews, Ralph and Fred Zipp, John Brown, Jim and Bill Dunning, very special friend, Ralph Warstad. She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard and Patricia Dunning on September 18, 1983. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 1:00 PM . Saturday at Crestwood United Methodist Church. No visitation. former Gertrude Dunning, married the late Francis W. Brown. She re-married

August O.Sundberg March 10, 1953 at Muskegon, Michigan. and he died December 4, 1981. Mrs.

Sundberg was a member of St.Paul's Episcopal Church where she had been active

in the Womens Guild and Phoenix Chapter of White Shrine of Order Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, John E. Brown of Grand Rapid, a daughter, Mrs.

Robert (Carol D.) Bodnoe of Farmington Hills, and several grandchildren and two

great-grandchildren. Interment will be held in Lakeside Cemetery at Muskegon,

Michigan.

According to unt Jean Popma, Aunt Gertude's mother Cora sent her to live with the Truax family. She got pregnant by their son and were to marry. He died in WWI and the baby was stillborn. It is buried in Ravenee, marker says baby.

years old of Ravenna, who was injured February 27, according to Deputy Sheriff,

Ivan L. Cole, the automobile Mr. Price was driving which contained two other

Ravenna men, all returning from work in Muskegon Plant when the car went out of control,

and overturned. Mr. price is believed to have fallen to sleep at the wheel. Mr.

Price received fractured vertebra, and Alex Warber 66 years old fractured

vertebra and Arthur Shoup 47 years old fractured neck. Mr. Price was born on the farm near

Ravenna, where he lived all his life, August 28, 1897. His father was the late

John Price formerly proprietor of the Ravenna Hotel. The widow, formerly Clara

Dunning and Mr.

She married Robert Dunn and they were very happy for 12 years. He had an affair with her best friend and thought he

got her pregnant. Later it was discovered she was pregnant from her husband. By then when Bob

wanted Momma back she was unhappily married to Donald Loew. She was taking care of his two children from a previous marriage and had me. They were very unhappy together and my mother was in very poor health

with arthritis.

She had many bone replacement surguries, lived in constand pain. Donald divorced her while I was away at college and took all the money and left her with nothing. In poor health she tried to work for 4 years until she could no longer walk. I helped support her until her dealth. She loved Jamie her first grandson and died when Kaylee was 4. May she walk again with the angles in heaven.

Phil died in 1965, but had been paralyzed in 1962, so I doubt they attended. Phil went into the navy at age 17, at that time living in Otsego, MI., and after he did his tour of duty, he came and lived with us. We were always very close. (From his 1/2 sister Joan) Uncle Charley's first wife married again. Joan is the daughter of Uncle Charley's first wife with her second husband.

Notes for Phillip Joel Dunning:

Phillip's biological father was Charles David Dunning, who married Mary Elizabeth Maile. Charlie and Mary Elizabeth divorced.

Phillip grew up in Otsego, Michigan, and at the age of 17 enlisted in the Navy, serving four years. After Phil returned home from the Navy he lived with his Mother and step-father Carl Radtke, half sisters Carla and Joan, in Battle Creek, Michigan.

He was married to Norma Prince in 1958, and resided in the Battle Creek, Michigan area. Phillip started working as a mail carrier for the local Post Office, in 1959.

When he was 28, to help supplement the family income, he and his brother-in-law, Charles Prince, were cutting down trees for the owner of the Ginger Quality Food Market in Battle Creek. As he loosened his safety belt to shift it under a limb, he lost his hold, falling across the limb he had just cut down, and broke his back, becoming paralyzed from the waist down. He was the father of two sons, a two year old, an eight month old, and a third child on the way.

After eight months of therapy, at the American Legion Hospital, he became a wheel chair student at Kellogg Community College, where he completed one year before transferring to Ferris state College, in Big Rapids, Michigan. When Phillip drove his family to Big Rapids it was with the help of "hand equipment", installed on the steering wheel of his auto. Phil was an outstanding student, working toward a degree in business administration.

Even though Phil was paralyzed from the waist down, he had become a powerful swimmer. However, in 1965 while swimming underwater, with a face mask and snorkel in the Muskegon River near Morley, Michigan, Phil disappeared. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was sadly found by his pregnant wife wo administered CPR to no avail.

Norma's parents were Clarence Virgil Prince who married Nannie Belle (Bradley) Prince. Norma's second marriage was to Kieth Rogers, July 2, 1966, they divorced January 19, 1970. She then married James Cooper Hunt, March 14, 1970, and divorced in July 9, 1973.
