REV. DANIEL BRADLEY LAWTON

CHAPTER II - DANIEL BRADLEY LAWTON

First Generation

1. Daniel Bradley 1 LAWTON, Rev., son of JOSIAH T. LAWTON and BETSY BRADLEY, was born in St. Lawrence Co, New York 5 JUN 1814. Daniel died 12 MAY 1896 in Putnam Co, Florida, at 81 years of age. His body was interred MAY 1896 in Interlachen, Putnam, Florida, Pineview Cemetery.

He married three times. He married Permelia between 1834 and 1838. In 1877 all census records in St. Lawrence County burned and were reconstructed. Daniel was listed in the reconstruction as a bachelor living alone in 1834. These records are located in the Genealogy room of the Gouverneur Museum in Gouverneur, New York. Permelia was born in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York 1818. Permelia died 17 MAR 1842 in Bath, Steuben, New York, at 23 years of age. Her body was interred MAR 1842 in Bath, Steuben, New York, Pioneer Cemetery. He married Emily "Emma" in New York, AFT 1842. Emily was born in New York in 1811. Emily died 10 FEB 1865 at 53 years of age. Her body was interred FEB 1865 in Wright Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, Advent Cemetery. He married Lydia J. before 1870. Lydia was born in Pennsylvania CA 1830. She had been married to Unknown JENKINS, by whom she had a son, Louis A. JENKINS. Lydia died in 1888 at 58 years of age. Her body was interred 1888 possibly in Interlachen, Putnam, Florida, Pineview Cemetery. Daniel graduated from the Wesleyan Seminary December 25, 1833 in Gouverneur, New York. In 1842 he was pastor of the Bath, New York Methodist Episcopal Church. In that same year his wife, Permelia, died (presumably in childbirth with a stillborn child) and is buried in the Bath Pioneer Cemetery. The 1850 census finds him in Wilson, Niagara County, New York and married to his second wife, Emily. Silas and his first wife, Permelia, had two children who lived, and he had three children with Emily. In 1860 Daniel was a Methodist Minister in Wright Twp, Ottawa Co, Michigan. Emily died in Ottawa County in 1865. At some time before 1870, he received a call to preach in Knoxville, Tennessee at a Methodist Episcopal Church. He is shown in Florida in 1893 as a Methodist Episcopal Church preacher. He died there near Keuka in 1896 and is buried in the cemetery at Interlochen, Florida. Keuka is now a part of Interlachen. Even when it was a town, there wasn't much there. It did have a hotel, which is now a private home, a general store and a church.

1893: Florida-preacher of Methodist Episcopal Church as per 1893 Co. History "Rev. Daniel Bradley Lawton is engaged in the ministry near Knoxville, TN"

A short obituary that appeared in the 1896 Minutes of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church states that Daniel was born in the western part of New York state on 5 June 1814, and that he died near Keuka, Florida, on 12 May 1896. He is buried in Interlochin, Florida. It made no mention of his wife or any children.

It states that he was converted when he was twelve years old, and that he began preaching when he was eighteen.

Because his time in Holston Conference was limited (and the fact that he died outside the jurisdiction of the Conference), the writer of his obituary didn't have much information at hand when he wrote it.

Daniel Bradley LAWTON and Permelia had the following children:

+ 2 i. Fidelia 2 L. "Dell" LAWTON was born 4 JUL 1838.

+ 3 ii. Wilbur Fisk LAWTON was born FEB 1840.

She married twice. She married Prescott E. BALLARD in Ottawa Co, Michigan, 1 NOV 1860. Prescott was born in New York CA 1831, and was the son of Unknown BALLARD and Mary. Prescott was a farmer in Coopersville, Michigan. It is unknown at this time whether Prescott died or they were divorced. She married Edwin M. DEAN before 1869. Edwin was born in Ohio CA 1816. He was a marble mason. Fidelia was listed in the 1860 census before her marriage as a teacher in Ottawa County, Michigan. She was shown living alone (widowed) in both the 1910 and 1920 census in Petoskey, so Edwin must have died before that.

Coming to Petoskey in the early days Mrs. Dean became closely associated with various activities during the growth and development of the city. She was always busy quietly administering to the wants of the needy and aiding her friends in times of need. She was active in the First Methodist church and was the second Order of Eastern Star, of this city. She was also a member of Lombard Woman's Relief Corps. Petoskey Evening News, Friday, May 18, 1928, Pages 1&4:
CHURCH WORKER IS CALLED HOME
Mrs. Phyllis M. Lawton Dies Last Evening at Age of 85

Prominent in Every Good Work in Petoskey for 50 Years~~ Funeral Saturday

Mrs. Phyllis M. Lawton, widow of the late W.F. Lawton, died last evening at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 24 days. Mrs. Lawton had suffered for the last week from injuries received in a fall in which one hip was broken. Last winter she fell and broke a wrist. For the last two years her health had gradually failed.

In the death of Mrs. Lawton Petoskey loses one of her most loved women, a tireless and devout church worker and a woman who had aided in every worthy undertaking in Petoskey in the last half century. She was a charter member of the First Methodist church, of the Women's Relief Corps, of Beulah chapter, Order Eastern Star, a Bay View camp meeting pioneer, early member of the Bay View Reading Circle, and many, many other organizations laboring for community uplift.

Mrs. Lawton continued to maintain her home at 611 State street even after the passing of her husband, whose death in 1926 broke the circle of family life after sixty years and six months. The pioneer woman was born July 23, 1846 at Ayreshire, Scotland, just three miles from the Robert Burns home. She left Scotland at the age of ten years, sailing with her parents on one of the American bound sailing ships of the day. (Continued on page four.) The trip consumed seven weeks. The family settled in Wayne county near Detroit.

Coming to Petoskey in 1877, the Lawtons at once became active in all doings of the village, and Mrs. Lawton served faithfully and long in every department of work of the Methodist church and Sunday school. She was on hand for the first camp meeting in Bay View and for six years aided Mr. Lawton in the management of the Bay View House. She leaves two sons, W. Bradley Lawton of Petoskey and G.C. Lawton of Jackson. One brother, John A. Brighton, resides at Romulus. Other relatives include four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Rev. W.S. Ross of the Baptist church is to conduct the funeral services tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at the family home on State street. The W.R.C. is expected to have a part in the service. The O.E.S. will attend as a body. Burial will be in Greenwood.
