Pvt. Henry Philos Bateman

Henry Philos Bateman was born in New York on January 9, 1843, the son of Hiram Bateman and Philena Bateman. He moved to Michigan with his parents in April, 1843, according to the obituary of his father, Hiram Bateman.

Military Service Records:

Henry Philos Bateman enlisted for Civil War service on December 7, 1861 for 3 years, age 18, at Grand Rapids, MI, and served as private in Co. B, 3rd Michigan Infantry . He was discharged on December 11, 1862, at Washington D. C., on account of wounds received at Groveton, Virginia, August 29, 1862. His left arm was immobile caused by a gunshot wound through the deltoid muscle near the shoulder joint.

Henry is listed as 5 feet 9 inches tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair and by occupation, a farmer. After he returned to Lamont, he died on September 29, 1866, according to his gravestone records. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan.

Henry married Clara P., born September 3, 1851, died January 7, 1905, according to her gravestone record. Clara is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
