Young Life Cut Off

Bernard Bottje, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bottje, died Sunday evening at seven o’clock after a long illness with tuberculosis. Deceased was born in Grand Haven January 22, 1885 and lived in this city practically all of his life.

Four years ago he was stricken with an attack of pleurisy, from which it is believed his fatal illness developed more recently, as he had never been in good health since. Until about a year ago he held the position of register of probate in the office Judge Kirby, but because of his failing health he was forced to give up active work. He retired to his home and spent as much time as possible in the open in the hope of regaining his lost health.

His many friends have watched his condition anxiously hoping that he might shake off the dread hand that had clutched him, but it was of no avail and the young people of the city heard with sorrow, that the end had come to one whom they all admired.

Ben Bottje, as he was familiarly known to his friends, was the soul of sunshine and good nature. His presence was always in demand among his fellows, because he was one with whom everyone liked to associate. Big hearted and happy natured ready to enter into good things that make life worth living, his rare character and his superb friendship, have long been appreciated. He was bright and clean minded with the desire to help and never to hurt. His career cut off in its very beginning, he gave promise of a place in the world for which there are only too few to fill. Those who knew Ben best can appreciate him most.

He is survived by his parents and the following sisters and brothers: Henry of Holland, Henriette, Anthony, Alice, Jeannette, Mary and Richard of this city.

The funeral will be Wednesday, with services at the home.
