Former Hope Church Pastor Passes Away

August Bruske

Word has been received in Holland announcing the death in Ypsilanti of Dr. August F. Bruske, past pastor of Hope Church, a man who was loved and respected by a large number of people in Holland, both those who belonged to his church and others. During his years of residence in Holland, Bruske made many warm friends

Dr. Bruske died Saturday at Ypsilanti after a brief about of pneumonia. The funeral was held Monday.

Before he came to Holland, Bruske had made a wide reputation as an educator. He served for years as president of Alma College. He came to Alma College when that institution was a struggling college and when he left it 21 years later he had helped to place it on a firm basis both educationally and financially. He retired at the end of that period from this strenuous work to live very quietly.

Soon after that, Hope Church made a bid for his services and he accepted for a period of two years which was later extended to another two years. At the conclusion of his pastorate here he went to California where he lived for a time. Later he returned to Michigan and made Ypsilanti his home.

Mr. Bruske was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Germany and came to America as a youth and he fought for the land of his adoption when the need for men came. Later he studied for the ministry and he served a number of churches before he took up his career as a college executive.

(Dr. Bruske served in the 24th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War.)
