Captain George Painter Corts

George P. Corts was born in Pennsylvania, September 17, 1834, and died on April 18, 1870, age 35, in Lamont, Michigan. He married Harriet Bateman, born July 23, 1839, and died February 13, 1896.

George Corts enlisted as Lieut. in 12th PA Infantry for three months. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on August 23, 1861, commissioned an officer on August 25, 1861, transferred to 63rd PA Infantry, and mustered out on November 12, 1862. He was commissioned an officer in the U. S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department Infantry, promoted to full Captain in May 1863, and mustered out June 28, 1865. George Corts died April 18, 1870, from inflammation of the brain, according U. S. Mortality Records. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan.

"Among my commissioned officers I most especially refer to the Department the names of First Lieut. G. W. Gary and H. P. Fulton, as distinguished for their gallant conduct. First Lieut. and Adjt. George P. Corts was again distinguished and slightly wounded."
