Obituary of Martin De Boe

Captain Martin De Boe, for a long time a resident of Holland, died at 8 o’clock Friday evening in the Soldiers’ Home hospital at Grand Rapids at the age of 72 years. Death was caused from an old wound in his hand. After the hand was amputated some time ago, Captain De Boe went to the Grand Rapids Soldiers’ Home hospital.

Martin De Boe was born in the Netherlands, coming to America with his parents in 1847 and settling on a farm near Grand Rapids. Later he came to Holland. He enlisted early in the Civil War and receiving a wound in the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862, he was honorably discharged. Later he reenlisted and rose to the rank of captain. He won for himself great distinction for his bravery and was respected by his comrades.

A widow and six children survive him: John, William, George, Peter, James and Mae and two sisters.

The remains arrived here Saturday and the funeral services were held Tuesday under the auspices of the surviving members of Co. I, of which company he was an officer.
