De Vries One of Five Soldiers in Georgian Campaign

His Death Leaves Only Four Remaining of Old Vets

Renke De Vries, who passed away at his home in Drenthe and who for years has been considered the village blacksmith, was one of five of the only survivors remaining of Company I who had been through the Georgia campaign, one of the hardest campaigns of the Civil War. The only four who now remain alive are Jos Ver Planke, former sheriff of Ottawa County now living at Spring Lake, Mr. Van Regenmorter, who was lighthouse keeper at Holland Harbor for at least 40 years, Peter De Vries, a retired grocery merchant, and Peter De Feyter who for years sailed before the mast on some of Holland’s windjammers. These old "cronies" would have a small reunion of their own from time to time recalling incidents of their struggles during the Civil War.

(Renke De Vries is buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.)
