Edgar F. Hiler

Edgar F. Hiler, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans of Ottawa County, died at his home, 203 W. 12th Street, Sunday, August 8, aged 78 years He was carrying water to put out a fire in railroad property adjoining his home. The neighbors assisting at the work, seeing him fall, rushed to his side, but apparently death was instantaneous.

Mr. Hiler was born in Pennfield, New York, November 12, 1848, spending his early life there. He enlisted at the age of 17 in Independent Company, No. 44, from New York State, in the early spring of 1865.

Mr. Hiler, with his wife and children, came to Michigan in 1872, coming to Holland in 1895, in which city he has since resided. The deceased is well known as a painter and interior decorator.

Those surviving Mr. Hiler, besides the widow, are the following children; Jesse D. and William K. of Grand Rapids, Mrs. F. Ackerman of Grand Haven, Edgar P. of Holland,

Charles F. of Detroit, Mrs. Lute Stevens, Mrs. Fred Mosher and Leroy E. of Lansing. There are also 10 grandchildren to mourn the loss.

Of a family of 14 brothers and sisters, of whom Mr. Hiler was the eldest, the two youngest survive: John T. of Spring Lake and Mrs. Washington L. Smith of Grand Rapids. A sister, Mrs. Carrie Bowen of Fowlerville, passed away two weeks ago.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Interment was in the family lot in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

This Was a Family of Real Fighters

Mr. And Mrs. Edgar Hiler, who this month will celebrate the 54th anniversary of their marriage at their home in this city, have come from a family of war heroes.

Hiler’s great-grandfather fought under Gen. Sulivan in the Revolutionary War; Giles Parker, grandfather, served in the War of 1812; Hiler enlisted in the Civil War when a lad of 17 and took part in the close of the struggle; two sons and a brother served in the Spanish-American War; his brother’s son served on the Mexican border and later was killed in the Battle of Chateau-Thierry, and his grandson served overseas in the World War.
