Another Veteran is Called to Rest

Sabin Hutchins

Sabin Hutchins, Civil War veteran and one of Coopersville’s grand old men, passed away Sunday morning after a brief illness. Until just a few weeks ago, it was common to see him pass The Observer door several times a day, as he went down after the mail, or for something needed for the house. Until the death a few weeks ago of his only son, Norman, he made these trips every day, frequently stopping for a brief word or two, but after that he did not feel equal to the task. For a few weeks we missed him, and then Friday came the word that his condition was serious, and Sunday the news that he had passed on. The funeral was held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Free Methodist church, and was attended by a large number of old-time friends and neighbors. Rev. R. G. Calkins, local pastor, had charge of the service, and took the 23rd Psalm as his text. Rev. Calkins was assisted by Revs. M. W. Biglow and E. F. Garter. Burial was in the local cemetery.

Sabin Dexter Hutchins was born in Hudson, Lenawee Co., Michigan, August 26, 1845. He came with his parents to Coopersville during his boyhood, and enlisted for service in the Civil War, serving in Co. D, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He returned to Coopersville after the war. He and Rocella Bishop were united in marriage February 19, 1868. She preceded him in death April 29, 1914. Their only son, Norman, passed away only a few weeks ago, May 10, 1933. He was married again to Augusta Cassety on August 26, 1915. She survives him, and he is also survived by a foster daughter, Mrs. Alta Taylor, and by her husband, Perd Taylor; two grandchildren, Carl Hutchins and Mrs. Edna Hutchins and Mrs.Edna Ostenson, and two great- grandchildren, Lois and David, also by several nephews and many other relatives.

For many years he had been a faithful member of the Free Methodist Church, and was a regular attendant of its services until he was no longer able to go to church. He will be sincerely missed by a large circle of friends.
