Frank Jones

Frank Jones was born in Holly, Oakland County, Michigan, June 8, 1841. He was the first white child in the region where Belding now stands, his father, a millwright, building the Bross Mill in 1843.Their only neighbors were a camp of Indians on the opposite side of Flat River. In 1857 he with his parents moved to Crockery Township, Ottawa County, where he worked at the carpenter trade during the summer and teaching school winters, until 1861 when he enlisted in Company F, Michigan First Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Gaines Mill, one of the Seven Day Battles- taken prisoner and was in Libby Prison at Richmond, Virginia.

He was united in marriage to Mary A. Gibbs on August 9, 1863, and to this union one child was born (Macy) Mrs. E. W. Ives of this place.

He taught the Nunica School in 1866, continuing to teach until 1874.

He built many homes all through this surrounding country from Spring Lake to Coopersville. Mr. and Mrs. Jones had nearly reached their golden wedding anniversary, when his wife was suddenly stricken, passing away March 20, 1913.

On June 12, 1915, he re-married and passed away into the higher life at his home in Stanton, Michigan, Saturday, January 28, 1928. The remains were interred in the family lot at Coopersville Cemetery on Monday afternoon.
