Holland City News, November 26, 1908

Capt. Jay McCluer, aged 77 years, died at his home in Spring Lake last Wednesday evening. Capt. McClure was a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of Co. H, Sixth Michigan Cavalry. Deceased was well known in marine circles, having been engaged in building little steamers at Spring Lake since 1872. Some of the boats he built are the "Vane", "Francis", "Maud Titley," "Jessie Slyfield," " Myrtle McCluer," and the well known "Millie Walsh."

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from his home and were in charge of the G. A. R. of which he was a member.
