Israel (Edward) Miner

Israel Miner was born in 1844 in New York. He was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted in Co E, 30th Michigan Infantry, on December 21, 1864, for 1 year, age 18. He was mustered out June 30, 1865.

Sometime after the Civil War, Israel Miner changed his name to Edward Miner. Allendale Township Cemetery records list Edward Miner as being buried on June 18, 1907 in lot # 239. Israel Miner, buried in lot # 239, has a gravestone listing his military service and also lists 1907 as the date of death and 1844 as the birth date.

There was a time during the history of our country when people discriminated against the Jewish people and many Jewish people changed their name so that it would sound less Jewish.

The 1880 U. S. Federal Census in Lansing, MI lists, Edward Miner, 43, Mary J. Miner, 26, Effie Miner, 8, Fredrick Miner, 3, Elmer Marks, 15

Mary Miner, wife of Israel (Edward)), filed for CW widow pension benefits in 1907 .
