Late Mailman Dies at Wheel
Joe Patmos of Hudsonville Found in Car

Joe Patmos, 74, retired rural mail carrier of Hudsonville, apparently died of a heart attack late Tuesday afternoon while driving his car. He was found dead at the wheel of the vehicle which had gone into a ditch on the Burnips road four miles south of Jamestown.

Mr. Patmos was on his way home after having assisted in the work at the farm of a relative. he resided at 43 School St.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy; two sons, Dr. Martin Patmos of Kalamazoo and Dr. Bernard Patmos of Adrian; and one daughter, Frances, of Midland.

He also, leaves a brother, Cornelius of Jamestown, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Tigelaar and Mrs. Lena Ripma, both of Grand Rapids.

Mr. Patoms retired in 1950 after having served as a rural mail carrier out of the Hudsonville post office for 45 years. He served patrons on Route 1. On his retirement four years ago The Record carried a story on his career in which he recalled the early days of his work when he carried the mail with a horse and buggy in summer and on a sleigh in winter.

He was a native of Zeeland Township and married the former Lucy kiel in 1901. He was a member of the county school board for 25 years.

The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday at Hudsonville Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Murfin officiating. Interment will be in Georgetown cemetery.

Friends and relatives may meet the family at the Vander Laan Funeral Home in Hudsonville on Thursday from 2 to 4 in the afternoon and 7 to 9 in the evening.
