Veterans Given Military Burial

Thomas Toogood

The rapidly thinning ranks of Coopersville’s Civil War veterans suffered another heavy loss this past week when two members of the Grand Army of the Republic, Myron S. Creager and Thomas Toogood were laid to rest in the Coopersville cemetery.

Mr. Toogood, who died Saturday, was the oldest of the veteran his age being 96, while Mr. Creagor was 93. Each was given a military funeral, with the last rites at the grave being in charge of Raymond Raskins Post of the American Legion, with Carl Hutchins, post commander. Taps were sounded by a member of the local Boy Scout troop.

Only five of the "boys" who wore the blue remain to "carry on." They are: John Jackson, A. C. Muzzall, John Spencer, Chas Nichols and John Park, Sr.

Thomas Jefferson Toogood was born May 17, 1838, in Crawford County, Ohio and at the age of 12 came with his parents, brothers and sisters to Michigan, locating a short distance from the present home where he resided until the war broke out in 1861.

He enlisted in Co. G, 21st Michigan Volunteer Regiment, being mustered into the U. S. service September 4, 1862. He was discharged from the service at the close of the war, August 18, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky.

At the age of 24 he was married to Katherine Hughes, who preceded him in death three years, and in this union five children were born, three of whom survive: Leo at home and John and Jess of Grand Rapids.

Mr. Toogood passed away Saturday at his home north of Coopersville.

He is also survived by four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great- great- Grandchildren; two brothers, Emory of Big Rapids and Parley of Hartford, Washington; also many friends.

Many relatives from out of town came to attend the last rites which were held Tuesday afternoon at the Van Alsburg Funeral Home, with Rev. H. R. Strong officiating. Howard Irish and Horace Walcott sang, being accompanied by Mrs. Irish. Interment was in the Coopersville Cemetery.
