Andrew Webster

Another of Coopersville’s Civil War veterans has been summoned by death to answer that final roll call. Andrew J. Webster, aged 84, a member of Company I, Third Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and a resident of Coopersville until a few years ago, died Saturday evening, April 13, at the home of his son, G. F. Webster, 1451 Wealthy Street, Grand Rapids, after an illness of three days. He had been in failing health since last December.

Mr. Webster enlisted in Grand Rapids with Company I, at the outbreak of the Civil War and served throughout the struggle. He participated in the battles of Gettysburg, The Wilderness and many other important engagements. For a time he was a captive in Libby Prison.

Born in Phelps, N. Y., he came to Michigan after his marriage soon after the close of the war. He resided many years in Allendale, six years in Hart and fourteen years here in Coopersville. He went to Grand Rapids two years ago after the death of his wife. In the early days of Grand Rapids he was a cook for lumbermen arriving there with logs on the Grand River. He was a member of the local G. A. R. post.

Besides his son, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Preston Snyder, of Comstock Park, and O. A. Webster of Mt. Pleasant; and twelve grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the Lyzen Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
