1942 Class Prophecy

By Marcia Zwagerman

"Two days – just two whole days before the ship would sail," thought I as I bustled around in my cozy little apartment in Honolulu, Hawaii.

These last two days had been very busy for me for I had been making many necessary arrangements, since I was to be the head nurse of the army ship, "Jupiter". We were to sail to San Francisco on Thursday to bring some fifty wounded soldiers to the United States to recuperate for the duration of the war.

Two days went swiftly by and Thursday’s dawn promised good sailing weather. At six o’clock the ship with its crew and the wounded soldiers including ten nurses and myself sailed for the United States.

Six weeks later we arrived in San Francisco. It seemed good to walk again on American soil and to be home safe and sound. I immediately made plane reservations to Hudsonville, Michigan, my old home town. "Your plane leaves in two hours," said the neatly uniformed ticket girl. I looked at her again and recognized her as being none other than my classmate of years ago, Dorothy Talsma. As she wasn’t busy, we chatted gaily for a few minutes. I told her that I was now a nurse and that I was going back home again to visit my relatives and look up my old classmates. She said that she didn’t know what had become of any of them.

Finally I bid her farewell and found the way to my hotel. After an hour’s rest, I took my belongings and returned to the airport. As I boarded the plane I was greeted by the stewardess. Immediately I recognized her. "Why Frances Van Dyke!" I exclaimed, "imagine seeing you here! Dorothy didn’t tell me you were a stewardess on this plane!" "Of course not," she replied, "I just began working for this company. Ivan Dykema is a pilot for the American Airlines and I was the stewardess on the plane he piloted. By the way, is Dorothy working here?" I told her that Dorothy was a ticket girl. On the plane we talked until other passengers claimed her attention.

After a pleasant trip I arrived in Hudsonville. I was surprised to see how different the town looked since the last time I saw it. There were now several factories and an airport. I took a taxi to my home. The next day I went to my former teacher’s home. Mr. and Mrs. Wezeman now had three curly-headed children. I told him what I had been doing and asked if he knew what had become of any of my former classmates. He then informed me that Donna Mae Emelander was married to Frank Buys and were both happy and contented. Albertha Veltema had worked her way through college and was now a stenographer in one of the factories in Hudsonville. Robert Wierenga had married a pretty brunette from Zeeland and was living in Grand Rapids.

We then went for a ride around town and he continued to tell me about my classmates. Bernard Klamer had followed in the footsteps of his father and was an excellent carpenter. Harold Krol thought he would like the Navy so he joined it. Nelson and Claude Victory were partners in a trucking business which they own. Bernard Roelofs became an excellent detective and was successful in most of his cases. John Heuvelman had given his services to his country by enlisting in the Air Corps. Sarah Emeleander had become an expert buyer of women’s dresses for Herpolsheimer’s and spent a great deal of her time in New York. My former teacher finished his story by adding that he did not know what had become of Marjorie Karsten.

After a brief vacation in Hudsonville, I started on my return trip to San Francisco. My first stop was in Chicago where I was to board a streamlined train. The train was not due for an hour so I decided to have my hair dressed in a well known beauty parlor. I stepped into the beauty salon, absentmindedly I looked at the girl ahead of me while trying to make up my mind what to have done. Finally I decided upon a finger wave. Then I asked for operator Number Five. To my astonishment this proved to be Marjorie Karsten. As she was working on my hair we renewed our acquaintance. In a half hour she was finished and I returned to the depot and continued my journey to San Francisco happy that I had been to Hudsonville and again had met and learned so much about my old acquaintances.
