CAPTION: Recording instruments at Onaway State Park showed that 30 inches of snow had fallen on the Onaway area since the first snowfall of the season, Nov. 22, 1978. However, the streets of Onaway were relatively snow free. Where had the snow gone? The Presque Isle County Road Commission took care of the state highways of M-68, M-33 and M-211. Road commission superintendent Willard Schaedig reported that the cost of removal resulting from a normal snowfall averaged between $1,500 and $2,000. Snow was removed in one day with intersections and area edges finished up the next day. During the blizzard of 1978 it took nearly a week to clear Onaway's State Street. In other Onaway news, chief Ken Paulus of the Onaway Fire Department prepared a summary of department activity comparing fires in 1977 to those in 1978 and indicating areas of fire caution. Fire department volunteers were called to 60 fires as of Dec. 28, 1978. It answered 55 calls in 1977...In other news, R. Leslie Hart accepted a plaque in recognition of his 35 years of service as Waverly Township treasurer.
