The 1922-23 was another successful year for the Onaway High School (OHS) basketball team. Playing their first Class B
basketball, on account of enrollment of 14 above the Class C limit, made a very enviable record.
On Nov. 12, coach Spanenberg called for basketball practice. A number of players responded; Lesson, Morrison, Fusee,
McClutchey, Stone and Ervingham of last year's squad, while an army of new players showed up as well.
After a week's practice, Harrisville High motored to our city. After a somewhat hot contest they were defeated 31-10,
which started off the OHS schedule.
On Dec. 8 the team went north, bound for St. Ignace. the trip was splendid up to Mackinaw City, and then we boarded
the boat to cross the Straits. It was a little rough that night and the rolling of the boat had an effect on the stomachs
of Leeson and Stone, who in a short time were seen feeding the fish. But we arrived in St. Ignace safe and after a
hearty supper went down to the hall and got ready for the contest. We defeated St. Ignace in a hot game 21-1. So with
a good start this record was kept up for eight straight victories, among which were teams like Sault Ste. Marie, a class A,
and Alpena and Cheboygan.
In the ninth game, which was with Petoskey on their floor, Onaway was defeated in a close game by 9-13, the first defeat
of the season, but it was no disgrace from a school like Petoskey playing on their home floor.
On March 23 the team went forth to Petoskey for the annual tournament held there. As luck would have it, coach Spanenberg
drew Petoskey for a starter. We were defeated 29-18 by the strong Petoskey team, the champions of the tournament. The
teams losing their first game played in the consolation tournament, and Onaway took first over Cadillac and Big Rapids, winning
the consolation cup.
The team wished to show their appreciation and thanks for the new suits purchased with money given by the men of the
American Wood Rim factory. The suits, by the way, were the best looking at the torunament and made quite a hit with the crowd.
During the season Onaway won 15 our of 16 games, losing by four points to Petoskey. The total score stood Onaway 510, opponents
180.
The outlook for Onaway's 1924 basketball cagers is very good, with all this year's squad being underclassmen with the
exception of Sam McClutchey, who is the only senior on the team.
