CAPTION: A wasted elk saddened and disgusted Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Tom Carlson. In the first week of February 1980, two groups of three and four elk were found killed within 50 yards of Clear Lake area roads. No meat was taken from any of the seven. Two more were found in the same area, one with a hind quarter removed. A 10th elk was shot in Otsego County. Another 12 animals were killed in 1979 from the only elk herd west of the Mississippi River. Rewards were being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the wanton killers. In other Onaway news, the question of whether or not city voters wanted to invest funds in the restoration of the Onaway Courthouse Building was to be answered at the presidential primary May 20, 1980.
