CAPTION: Sheriff Ray Kurczewski announced that he was resigning after only serving one year of a four-year term. Kurczewski, 51, said he made the difficult decision to resign because he was offered a job as a welfare fraud investigator in the Detroit area. Although he missed two months of work because of a heart attack, Kurczewski said his health was not a factor in the decision to resign. The most important consideration, he said, was job security. "This is a great opportunity, but I hate to leave this north country." In other Onaway news, Elwood L. McAdam, a 30-year law enforcement veteran with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources retired and planned to move to Montana where he hoped to pursue a lifelong interest in hunting and fishing.
