CAPTION: Both deer numbers and deer hunter numbers remained down as the Onaway area approached the close of the 1978 season. Fewer hunters tagged fewer deer meaning many nimrods returned to homes in the southern part of the state empty-handed. Robert Strong, wildlife biologist from the Gaylord office of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said the season's kill was running about 10 to 15 percent behind the 1977 season, although game law violations and arrests were about equal. By Nov. 27, 189 arrests were made in the district, 51 illegal deer recovered and eight elk had been shot. The new leader in the buck contest at Brock's Sport Shop was Harry Waldie who tagged a 10-pointer with over a 15-inch antler spread. He was followed by Larry Brewbaker with an 8-pointer. Above is an 8-pointer taken by Jim Tucker on the morning of Nov. 24, 1978.
