CAPTION: Kay Chamberlain, an Onaway summer resident, performed a final check of instruments before take-off in her small plane. In 1979, she was appointed by Gov. William Milliken to serve as a member of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission- the first woman ever to fill the position. The mother of 10 children, who held a nursing degree, first began flying lessons with her husband, Dr. Ray Chamberlain, 10 years ago. "I learned to fly to conquer my fear of flying." In July 1979 she participated in a commemorative air tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission. The flight touched down at 66 Michigan airstrips. In other Onaway happenings, the Onaway High School Class of 1959 conducted its 20-year reunion at the George C. Garms Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5857. There were 19 class members and their spouses who enjoyed a beef and chicken dinner plus a salad served by auxiliary members.
