CAPTION: Pictured is Jess King of Onaway and an 81-pound sturgeon caught in Black Lake just off the Bluffs, Feb. 15, 1956. The fish measured 67 inches from snout to tail. In other front-page news, Presque Isle County conducted its first cherry pie baking contest. There were 114 boys and girls competing. The Cherry Growers of Michigan sponsored the contest each year to promote the use of more cherries. The senior girl winner was Justine Northcott of Onaway, who went to Grand Rapids to compete in the state bake off. Mary Boucher of Millersburg ended up in second and won a trip to Michigan State University for 4-H Club. The junior boy and girl winners were both from Hawks: Robert Fairbanks, 12 and Nancy Poch, 12.
