CAPTION: Onaway High School's senior symphonic band took top honors in 1978 at the District Bands Festival in Petoskey. They earned a No. 1 rating, a superior mark that is equivalent of an "A." The only other school in Onaway's class to earn the 1 rating was the Petoskey concert band. The Onaway bands were under the direction of Karan Pregitzer. In other Onaway News, state Sen. Robert Davis was to attend the first annual Onaway Firemen's Ball. He was to be escorted by Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce president, Jerry McConnell. A pickup truck driven by a 26-year-old Onaway man ran into the locomotive of a Detroit & Mackinac Railroad train at the Black River Road crossing a few hundred yards north of M-68. The driver told officers he was driving northbound and did not see the train. Visibility was bad due to the presence of wooded knolls.
