CAPTION: James VanderLaan, the Lake City mayor, took part in a mayor exchange and served in Onaway for a day. He was the owner of Van's Building Supply Company, which was a lumberyard. He had affiliates in Lake City, Kalkaska and Reed City. He also was vice president of the Michigan Retail Lumber Dealers Association. In other Onaway news, plans for a new maternity department at Russell Memorial Hospital were ready. Construction was expected during the summer.
