1979 - Onaway Courthouse Is In Disorder From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook February 14, 2019

  
CAPTION: Like a monument to Merritt Chandler's ambition, the huge stone building
was sitting sternly in the heart of the city in 1979, outliving the Quaker father of
Onaway.  When the proposal to make Onaway the county seat failed, Chandler attempted to 
form a new county around Onaway, made up of the western half of Presque Isle County and the 
eastern half of Cheboygan County, but the plan failed by a small vote.  At left, there was
disorder in the court.  Boxes of ancient documents, broken furniture and other debris from
years of city government are piled high in the jury box where Onaway citizens once gathered
to pass judgment on their peers.
