Onaway Students Raise Money for Flag- Unknown Date From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook June 09, 2016

  
CAPTION: Elesha Rose was a teacher in No. 2 school and endeavoring to instill patriotism in the 
minds of her pupils by teaching them the flag salute, then published in the Michigan School Moderator, 
having only a 6-inch-by-12-inch flag.  One pupil remarked, "Don't you wish we had a larger flag, teacher?"
She replied, "Certainly. How many will help earn one?" All hands were up in a flash. Rolland Shaw shoveled
snow after a spring storm and his sisters, Georgia and Mary, cleaned the cupboards and glassware for a week.
Glenn Riley took care of his grandfather's cattle while he made a business trip to Rogers City.  Bessie East
sewed carpet rags; Alfred Mudge cut cedar for kindling; Annie Morgan took care of her sister's little children 
while she cared for a sick neighbor - and so on.  There was great rejoicing when the $5.50 needed to purchase the
flag from H.R. Pattengrill of Lansing was in place.  One bright May evening all assembled to see it raised
into position.  The date of this story is unknown.
