CAPTION: Drugs were the topic of an Onaway Parent-Teacher Organization meeting, and judging from the turnout at the January 1979 meeting, there were many community members interested. More than 30 people showed up at the meeting at the Onaway High School library to hear four panelists discuss abuse, and see the film, "Tempted." The panelists were Jean Keegan, Karen Vermilya, Chris Giles and Sharon Lyon. In other Onaway news, Onaway was one of two areas in the region named "most distressed" by the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments. Following a survey, the organization named Onaway and Wolverine as the two most distressed areas in the region...The flu hit the area. The virus seemed to be concentrated in the schools but people from all over town fell victim to the illness, and Russell Memorial Hospital reported 60 percent of its inpatients were admitted for flu symptoms.
