CAPTION: Marguerite Schmidt of Onaway bagged a nine-point buck about 8:30 on opening morning in North Allis Township. When she reported in at the chamber of commerce building, her brother, Fred Ellenberger, with whom she had been hunting, was still in the woods and had not had a shot at the time she came out of the woods. The buck weighed in at 185 pounds dressed. In other Onaway News, it was a warm start to the deer season 50 years ago. There was no snow on the ground, the weather was warmer than ideal; however, there were more and bigger deer taken in the first three days of the season than the year before. It was noted that many deer hunters stayed out of the woods to watch the televised Michigan State-Notre Dame football game.
