CAPTION: It was considered a historic day for the Onaway postal office. Lester "Bud" Stout (right) officially retired from the postal service after 37 years as a rural carrier. Bud had carried the mail on Rural Route No. 2 since Dec. 3, 1927. The Onaway News had a front-page story and stated that Bud had worked 1,924 weeks or 11.544 trips. He recalled using horses during his first two winters. Then, for several years he drove a Model-T Ford snowmobile, because ther roads were not plowed. On some of the winter months it would take 16 hours to complete the route. As the photo indicates, Newt Chapman Jr. took over, and in the photo, received the route box.
